Combining experience in lampworking, glass blowing, and jewelry design, the experienced glassblowers of Asheville Glass Center lead workshops and classes to share their passion for manipulating molten glass. The two- to three-hour intro courses teach neophytes to craft borosilicate marbles and soft glass beads, and more in-depth classes result in intricate implosion flowers and sand-cast solid forms. The center also offers open studio time for more experienced artists who wish to work alone, like the winningest three-legged racers.
Triple C Landscaping & Lawn Care is the brainchild of Zane Neugebauer, a certified horticulturist who started the business six years ago. He and his team of professional landscapers beautify lawns with a full menu of services. In addition to mowing the grass, trimming hedges and laying down mulch, they also help out with more labor-intensive projects such as planting trees and evicting intransigent garden gnomes.
Preschool Plus provides a fun, safe, and stimulating environment for 3, 4, and 5-year-olds to preheat their brains before the emotional and social rigors of life in kindergarten. With 25 years of experience as an early-childhood teacher and director, Kathy Hughes leads a team of certified educators that focus on cultivating the cognitive and developmental needs of each child. Although each instructor is equipped with eyes in the back of her head, a small teacher-to-student ratio ensures each child is nurtured and cared for. Based on the retention theory of the "Song That Never Ends," monthly themes are incorporated into every section of the curriculum. Each classroom also contains interest centers geared toward literacy, science, music, and how to properly eat an overstuffed burrito.
At more than 900 learning centers across the world, Sylvan offers kids a leg up through personalized, one-on-one programs prescribed by an in-depth skills assessment. Students build on past lessons to learn progressively, and sessions may hone in on different disciplines, granting kids the confidence to interpret literature and the rhetorical skills needed to negotiate a later bedtime. The positive mindset of personable, invested instructors helps to inspire kids to greater academic feats, as does a prize program that rewards hard work with CDs and gift cards.
The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous study facilities understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don’t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews.
Tutors work with students from kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas without having them tattooed on your chest. Many of Sylvan’s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results. After-school and summer classes can ready high-schoolers for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students to wow college-admissions officers with their superior essay-writing skills.
