Runners lace up for a half-marathon quest through some of Stark County's most splendorous scenery. Launching from the Massillon Recreational Center, the marathon charters along the Cuyahoga river and across 3 miles of undulating hills before the final stretch—the flat and steadfast terrain of the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath—where runners gape at natural and manmade marvels before dashing across the finish line at the Second Sole shoe store.

Fairview Park Recreation Department at the Gemini Center hosts an impressive array of classes—20 each week. They take advantage of the brand new facility's amenities, holding spinning classes in dedicated cycling rooms or teaching aquatic skills in the aerobic studio. They also hold outdoor classes during summer months, taking advantage of the sunshine and green lawns. "It's great to see members push themselves and have fun while doing it," reports the Center's group-exercise coordinator.

Beyond fitness instruction, they also use the facility to host summer camps, athletic leagues, and families looking for a day at the pool. They even built a second pool, exclusively for leisure, with waterslides, a lazy river, and submerged beauty parlors.

Tomato plants are imperfect, yielding just as many inedible fruits as the healthy, tasty ones. The organizers of The Tomato Bash devised an alternative employment for the unworthy bounty, transforming the leftover tomatoes into ammunition for a massive ketchup making party. Participants are encouraged to sport silly costumes for the big event, as they are inevitably going to get utterly filthy.

To kick off the festivities, revelers are entertained with a cadre of food trucks, beverage vendors, and DJ playing tunes, including rebellious anthems encouraging the tomatoes to throw themselves. At 3 p.m., the tomato foam machine outside of the tomato arena powers up, pumping the stage area full of bubbly, pink fruit foam. Then the hordes of goggle-clad contestants descend upon a large arena and lose themselves in a sea of red goo.

Most Popular Attraction/Offering: YMCA Halloween Track-N-Trail

Organized by the Union County YMCA, the Halloween Track-N-Trail 5K and 10K put a holiday-themed twist on a classic form of outdoor exercise. Participants charge through the course fully costumed, navigating from the Marysville high school track out onto the Jim Simmons Trail. Columbus Running Company times the runners, handing out final times as they reach the finish line. Prizes also go to the man, woman, and child with the best costume. After the race, attendees can hang out and bob for apples, snack on seasonal foods, or show off their participation medal to all the trees that refused to run.
