Though Ardy Conway and her staff of certified trainers at Ardy's Pilates Studio work primarily with three apparatus—the Reformer, the Cadillac, and the chair—they are well equipped to weave more than 500 Pilates exercises into their custom workouts. Ardy draws on more than 20 years of experience as she and her team tailor private and semiprivate sessions to individual goals, such as relieving joint pain or improving at golf. The instructors also host group Reformer classes, which max out at six students to keep classes personal and allow competitive sextuplets to remain at the same fitness level.
Custom Workouts might feel a bit smaller than your average chain gym—that's part of its appeal. The private setting allows gym-goers to work out on top-notch equipment without feeling intimated or overwhelmed. Staying true to its commitment to the individual, the gym also offers personal training with a reasonable price tag. But those who crave the motivation of peers can opt for group classes such as Zumba and spinning.
The Circuit Family Fitness aims to offer a venue for guests to infuse health into their lives, whether that stems from fitness or relaxation. The fitness side includes a fully equipped gym with free weights and cardio machines, as well as fitness classes, such as Zumba and cardio kickboxing. Guests looking for relaxation can recline in the infrared sauna, unwind with a Swedish massage, doze an aromatherapy body wrap, or enjoy a number of other spa services.
Set on 45 acres of rustic Central Coast wine country, Sagrada Wellness fosters relaxation and spiritual attunement through personal retreats that allow couples to hike, swim, and sleep away their stresses under the starry curtain of night. Ideal for those who need a breather from the breakneck pace of everyday life, retreats promote meaningful connections with close friends and family members by replacing hurried hugs and kisses with communal mealtimes, during which guests prepare and share food together. Days can be well-spent walking hand-in-hand across one of San Luis Obispo's white-sand beaches, reading partisan diatribes in the shade of ancient olive trees, or watering the man-eating plants trained to intercept bosses trespassing on the property. Other complimentary activities include sunbathing sessions beside a spring-fed lake, self-guided yoga practice, and expeditions through 8 miles of trails speckled with manzanilla trees and sacred mountain sage. For an additional fee, guests may arrange horseback-riding sessions and holistic spa treatments.
The Double Impact Cardio fitness studio is presided over by Melody and Melinda Luna, a duo of certified, seasoned, and dedicated fitness trainers. Amidst the studio's heavy punching bags and suspension ropes, Melody and Melinda lead personal-training sessions and a variety of group classes, including circuit training and kickboxing. The pair of trainers also conduct challenging boot-camp classes outdoors, helping clients slim physiques, build muscle, and enhance agility through military-inspired circuit workouts.
Curves' 30-minute workout whittles women with a signature circuit of hydraulic resistance machines designed to work with female bodies and promote weight loss, protect against osteoporosis, and deal with arthritis. Ladies can hop into the circuit circle at any of 13 strength-training stations, each of which works to tone two major muscle groups. After 30 seconds of repetitions, they step onto a nearby recovery board, which welcomes women to walk, jog, or speed-skate in place for a half-minute. This cardio burst jolts the heart rate, torching more calories as exercisers move onto the next resistance-training machine. An experienced trainer is always nearby to help manage participants’ machine maneuvering and Play Doh–based muscle making.
