Silver Sun Tan's variety of UV- and sunless-tanning equipment earned it the title of No. 1 Tanning Salon in the Athens Banner-Herald's 2013 Best of Athens Readers’ Choice awards. Certified staffers point patrons to traditional beds or the open design of the high-pressure SunBoard XTT system, which allows tanners to move limbs freely or practice levitating, and Mystic Tans as a UV-free option. The team also enhances self-confidence with the InShapeMD doctor-guided medical weight-loss program.

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Clients are offered generously discounted massages, based on meeting mutually agreed upon goals. Classes are small enough for individualized attention.
When and how did you first develop a passion for fitness?
Many [women I worked with] were always complaining about their weight. None of them were ever happy about watching me eat junk food day after day and never gain a pound. Somewhere along the line I realized that if I was able to get them to follow the same simple steps that I followed, they could actually lose some weight.
"I've always followed in her footsteps," says Shawna Nichols of her mother, Shawnee Goettig. Both women worked in medical care, Nichols with Alzheimer’s patients and Goettig in hospice care. Then, when Nichols joined her mother at Basic Wellness Center, she initially took on the administrative side of the business. But seeing each client walk out the door with a serene smile prodded her toward her mother's path again, and she soon became a massage therapist herself.
The mother-daughter team specializes in medical massage to treat chronic pain, customizing sessions to each client's needs or wingspan. Their hands glide over musculature aided by hypoallergenic lotions with an olive-oil base. Their private treatment rooms promote relaxation with dim lighting and a New Age soundtrack. Aromatherapy augments all treatments, including reflexology sessions and detoxifying footbaths, which relax pores while using an ionic charge to allow the body to release toxins back into the wild.
Since 2003, New Image Medical Aesthetic Center's Dr. Gregory Zengo has been drawing on his expertise in noninvasive treatments to beautify bodies from the inside and out. Through training, he's kept abreast of the latest techniques for Botox, mesotherapy, and vein treatments, and has even combined the techniques of several leading experts—including Dr. Jeff Klein, the inventor of tumescent liposuction—to create his own office-based treatment for fat reduction. Whether skimming off years or inches from bodies, Dr. Zengo is directly involved every step of the way.
His hands-on dedication to beauty has also been the guiding force for his physicians training program, through which he has been sharing his aesthetic skills since 2006. Dr. Zengo has trained more than 400 physicians since the program's inception, giving others the benefit of his keenness for spider-vein injections, natural hormone balancing, and the GPS coordinates of the fountain of youth.
At Athens Salon & Day Spa, master aesthetician Nazy and master cosmetologist Mary boast nearly 60 years of combined experience in the arts of client pampering and beautification. Nazy immigrated to the United States from the Middle East in 1989, bringing along her knowledge of khite, or threading, which extracts hair with cotton thread while stimulating blood flow to the skin. During facials and skin treatments, Nazy spritzes dermises with organic Éminence skincare products designed to prevent skin irritation without the harsh chemicals or lumberjack beards found in other brands. Mary’s mastery of retexturing hair and her soft perm technique pump limp strands full of robust volume, simplifying styling regimens with wash-and-wear maintenance.
