Everyone adores author Peter S. Beagle's poetic, yet occasionally anachronistic musings on what it is to want and to be wanted in this beloved deconstruction of European folklore.

Horizon Theatre Company is one of Atlanta’s longest-running small theaters, with a devoted following of season ticketholders. Located in the heart of Little Five Points, it is convenient to several local restaurants like The Vortex, but if you skip dinner before the show you can always indulge in one of the theater’s giant cookie-dough cookies. This company is known for comedic favorites like The Waffle Palace and David Sedaris’ The Santaland Diaries; these productions return year after year and are always popular. The shows also include offerings for the younger set like Madeline’s Christmas, as well as more adult-focused works by local writers, like Third Country and The Book Club Play. Seating is general admission, with certain sections reserved for subscribers. But the Horizon Theatre Company is intimate enough that there really isn’t a bad spot in the house.

When Manga African Dance gets going, the whole room turns into a swirl of sound and color. Ramatu Afegbua-Sabbatt founded the dance troupe in 1990 to share her passion for indigenous African culture. She hasn't had a difficult time turning people on to high-energy dance routines that incorporate drums, colorful clothing, and songs from across the African continent. While performing at schools and community organizations, the group teaches audiences about everything from the ceremonial music of Guinea to the rhythmic footwork of Nigeria. In addition to these performances, they host dance and drum classes for students of all ages and foot sizes.

Q&A with Annelise, Owner

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Sacred Thread is all about community. It's more than just a yoga studio—we are truly family. The teachers share personal stories, tips, and tricks, and they make an effort to practice with their students. We believe motivation occurs in numbers and by supporting one another.

What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?
We recently had a student who had not been able to touch her toes in years. After three weeks of practice, twice a week, she now touches her toes and is able to get her hands on the ground.

Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?
We prefer a mix of music with our classes. Everything from traditional kirtan to soul and rock. The one common thread is that the music is uplifting and speaks to the soul.

This one-day festival features numerous local and domestic breweries, including Atlanta's own SweetWater Brewing Company (one of the nation's oldest breweries), Yuengling, and more. As you make your dynamic flight through the park, enjoy victorious stops at flip-cup and beer-pong tables, or prove that a beer in the hand is worth four in the hole during a laid-back round of cornhole. By day, enjoy live musical performances by Stokeswood, and by night, join the rowdy masses as the fest moves indoors to the Masquerade for a late-night after-party. With five solid hours of consumption, competition, and celebration, the Atlanta Summer Beer Festival might just be the coolest beer event since the unveiling of the kegerator koozie.
