Every year, on the weekend just before Thanksgiving, the Mountain Mandarin Festival unites crowds beneath the Gold Country Fairgrounds' autumn-leaved trees to celebrate fresh crops of mandarin oranges. Throughout the event, family-centered activities keep visitors of all ages entertained, including cooking contests, professional-chef demonstrations, and live musical performances. Also on hand, Placer County growers dole out thousands of pounds of fresh mandarin oranges, and more than 200 vendors showcase gifts ranging from lotions and candles to artist-crafted jewelry.

The press certainly likes California Family Fitness, granting the exercise venue such awards as a top spot on KCRA-3's 2012 A-List and Sacramento News and Review's Best of Sacramento 2012 Award. The press, however, isn't the top priority for the gym's staff; they believe that, to quote their about CFF page, “awards don't greet you at the door.” Instead, they depend upon their dedicated staffers at the front desk, chaperones at the Kidz Club play zone, and personal trainers to make families of clients feel at home. Certified personal trainers take aspiring exercisers of all ages through regimens that make use of the 16 available locations' ample workout machinery. Seasoned instructors, meanwhile, hold group fitness classes, free with a membership, fostering community as they incinerate calories during high-energy Zumba, step aerobics, Turbo Kick, and Hip Hop Hustle. Nine of the locations boast pools that host swim lessons taught by certified water-safety instructors.

While hitting the gym, parents can drop wee ones at childcare havens lined with playgrounds and age-appropriate investment manuals. After breaking a sweat on the exercise floor, clients can also shed excess body moisture in saunas and tanning beds.

Compared with other areas around California?or the world, for that matter?gravity doesn't seem to have quite the same pull on the students at Free Flow Academy. Inside the training facility, you might see youngsters leaping from wall to wall or teenagers twirling gracefully through the air. Before you lodge a formal complaint with NASA, know that Free Flow is home to an array of hardcore exercises such as parkour, aerial silks, and mixed martial arts. For those looking to burn calories in a more traditional way, the instructors also lead kettlebell and strength-training classes. Its 20-deep team of instructors even teaches more grounded activities such as acting and music, uniting myriad art forms.

Not everyone can ball like Jason Thompson of the Sacramento Kings. It takes serious work even to get to where Ben McLemore was as a wide-eyed NBA rookie. But the path to greatness has to start somewhere, and that's where Hotshots Youth Basketball comes in.

Hotshots' summer camps and youth basketball clinics give kids the edge they need to take over the gym during the school year. Camps for kindergarteners through high-school seniors start with the fundamentals, such as dribbling or delivering a crisp bounce pass. Kids who have already mastered the basics can work on developing a smooth shooting stroke, an ankle-breaking crossover, or a cozy rapport with the refs.

Elliott Genovia fell in love with salsa dancing 12 years ago when he took his first salsa class. He soon became a member of Sacramento's salsa performance team and trained with respected dancers including Salomon Rivera and Ricardo Tellez. Through his education, he developed a cordial, supportive demeanor that helped him to offer dance lessons to aspiring dancers and clumsy police officers to get out of speeding tickets. Elliott opened his own studio, Dancing With Elliott, which eventually emerged from its cocoon to become Genovia Dance in 2010 after he married his dancing partner, Cara, who also teaches at the studio. The two teach both private lessons and group classes to students of all ability levels in the dance styles of salsa, merengue, cha-cha, hustle, and bachata.
