The weather in the Pacific Northwest isn’t always ideal for spending time outside, which is why Java Billiards keeps daytime as well as nighttime hours. More than just a shelter from the elements, though, the all-ages pool hall stands as an emphatic answer to boredom. It invites families to sink shots on five different pool tables and rack up wins during games of checkers and foosball. Making good on the “java” part of its name, the facility’s full espresso counter brews fresh lattes and mochas and serves up smoothies and italian sodas. Perhaps most importantly, Java Billiards maintains a safe environment for all ages by not serving alcohol or advertising itself as a hangout for vampires.

There are bowling alleys where you can go and just bowl. And then there's ACME Bowl?a 51,000-square-foot facility that contains two alleys, as well as an arcade, billiards room, two shuffleboard tables, multiple dining areas, and a bar?where you can do more, and often simultaneously. At any of The Alley's 30 glittering lanes, for example, you can have food delivered lane-side from the on-site restaurant, The Break Room. The Break Room's lineup of Big Lebowski nachos, sweet chili Thai pizzas, and lavish burgers gives your non-bowling hand something to do besides write a condolence card for the pins' family.

Private parties, meanwhile, can settle in away from the crowd at Seven10, a private lounge with 10 lanes flanked by leather couches and 150" projection screens. Smaller HD screens are mounted above nine-foot Brunswick pool tables at Q Billiards, broadcasting everything from NBA to World Cup games. The entire family-friendly venue is non-smoking.

Numbered balls ricochet across the green-felted pool tables at Olympic Billiards during regular open-play sessions and tournaments, their clacks creating a subtle rhythmic soundtrack. When not aiming pool cues or hiring a sheepdog to corral every ball except the eight ball, patrons can test their accuracy at dartboards and their timing at air-hockey tables. While playing, they sip on cocktails such as the incredible hulk, surfer on acid, or oatmeal cookie shot, or choose from 12 domestic, imported, and craft beers on tap. On the food menu, traditional pub bites mingle with Asian dishes such as gyoza, egg rolls, and spicy ramyun noodles.

Located inside Malarkey’s Pool and Brew, Grit City Comedy Club’s intimate, 150-seat venue stages close encounters between audiences and local and national comedians. The tables run right to the edge of the stage, allowing performers to riff back and forth with close viewers, and allowing close viewers to politely clean performers’ glasses after spit takes. While watching rib-tickling sets, guests can order from Malarkey’s full menu of food and draft beer, and wind down after the show with a game of pool.

Like the colourful fan of its namesake's tail feathers, diamonds and triangles of billiard balls nestle into racks on Peacock Billiards' tables. A grid of 30 tables in an array of sizes and colours populates the room, surrounded by cushy leather couches and bright murals. Beneath the clatter of sunken shots can be heard the rhythmic tap of table-tennis matches and the furious spinning of foosball handles. The James Joyce Bistro resides in the corner, where patrons sitting in circular booths enjoy drinks and nachos served in cored-out copies of Dubliners.
