At CSRA CrossFit, a team of CrossFit-certified coaches pushes their students past their personal fitness goals, building lean, powerful muscles with a high-intensity regimen of Olympic lifting, endurance workouts, and interval training. An ever-changing barrage of Workouts of the Day (or WODs) breaks up the boring routine with daily wake-up calls of deadlifts, pushups, and other exciting compound words, and yoga sessions build flexibility and range of motion.

A hush falls over the pews and all heads turn to see the bride step into the light as she glides down the aisle. The groom's face breaks into a huge grin, and guests can't help but smile themselves. For an instant, everyone in the room forgets that this couple is already married, and that no one in the room knows who they are. But, everyone agrees that the ceremony is beautiful. This is The NotWedding, a mock wedding in which on-trend wedding vendors display their talents to entice those planning their big day. Brides- and grooms-to-be are treated to an entire faux wedding, complete with ceremony, dinner, and dance reception. They spend dinner jotting down the names of the bakers who created the delectable wedding cake, the chefs who sizzled up the artfully plated meals, and the rental centers that provided the elegant table settings. Guests can also glean ideas for modern and hip decorations and wedding-planning advice, including tactful ways to tell their fiancée's father to retire his ruffled periwinkle tuxedo.

A biplane’s mechanized propellers whir. A satellite spins on its axis. Such are the Lego inventions of students enrolled in Bricks 4 Kidz’s after-school program. The blueprints for these miniature gadgets spring from the mind of Michelle Kote, who saw the potential for Legos to introduce young learners to architecture, engineering, and science. She draws upon her own background as an architect to create model plans for Lego creations with kid-friendly themes such as amusement parks, famous buildings, and outer space. Students work together in small groups to replicate these models, honing their creativity, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork skills along the way.

It can take an artist years to apply the right brushstrokes to a canvas, but at Corks and Canvas, it only takes one night. During each three-hour painting session, a professional artist walks classes through every step of duplicating a piece of acrylic art. Made up of participants aged 16 and older, the group classes convene at a public venue such as a restaurant. Students can buy food and drinks to snack on throughout the night or smear onto their canvas if they’re tired of painting. For scheduled sessions and private events for adults or kids, Corks and Canvas supplies canvases, paint, brushes, easels, and aprons.

Melissa Larkin Schultz holds a masters degree in vocal performance and a résumé that includes singing in operas and chamber choral groups. At Larksong Studio, however, it's the voices of her students that ring out. Melissa has designed a voice lesson curriculum for students aged 13 and above that incorporates breathing, posture, vocal range, and an understanding of musical styles. Melissa also offers piano lessons for kids aged 5 and older and Musikgarten classes for children up to 16 months old, which impart musical understanding through sing-a-longs, games, and rhythm-pattern-recognition exercises.

A mother horse and her newborn colt saunter up to the wooden fence, greeting the children eager to pet the creatures' noses. The team members of Graystone Ranch thrive on seeing these types of interactions. Managing 500 acres of woods and pasturelands that serve as a preserve and rehabilitation center for both domestic and exotic animals, the ranch hands form a nonprofit team dedicated to teaching children and adults how man and animals can live in harmony.

Concurrent with such educational programs as summer camps, the grounds also host abundant recreational opportunities with two spring-fed lakes, wooded hiking and horse-riding trails, zip lines, and a petting zoo. Further diversions range from a gem-and-mineral museum to a horse-painting program, which lets kids put their colored handprints or re-creations of a favorite Monet on the sides of a white horse.
