Each year, Austin Child Guidance Center’s team of counselors, social workers, and psychiatrists treats more than 3,000 children, adolescents, and their family members. Clients can opt to engage in therapeutic sessions in the quiet, natural setting of the garden, which therapists have found can help encourage youth to be more expressive. Green thumbs maintain the Children’s Healing Garden in an environmentally conscious manner by planting native and adapted plants that help minimize water usage and fertilizers. Austin Child Guidance Center would like to extend the garden’s therapeutic potential by expanding it to include a new garden bed.
Originally a home-based childcare center for medically fragile infants and toddlers, Sammy’s House expanded to become a more comprehensive, centrally located center after realizing the need for this type of care in central Texas. Today, the foundation of the operations consists of a child-development program, a respite-care program, and a therapeutic-equipment loaning program. Each day, groups of families and professionals work together to design and lead day programs that combine therapy, education, and care for children with special needs, along with afterschool and weekend programs for the children and their siblings. Day programs maintain low child-to-staff ratios, ensuring that each child receives special care and attention while following a play-based curriculum.

Summer workshops explore topics ranging from robotics to soccer, and certified instructors lead groups through scavenger hunts and volunteer projects during assorted camp programs.
While standing on the balcony of a hotel in London, Lady Bird Johnson and Ann Butler, the wife of Austin’s mayor, admired the green trail that follows the Thames. The scene inspired them to hatch a plan to beautify their own waterways. Over the next three decades, in partnership with local garden clubs, they planted trees and flowers along the polluted shores of Lady Bird Lake, undoing centuries of damage from the flooding of the Colorado River. Now the trail receives 1.5 million visitors each year and creates an oasis among Austin's skyscrapers and streets. The Trail Foundation implements improvements to the trail’s infrastructure and environment while honoring the vision of its founders. The foundation has built tree groves, landscape lighting, and a bathroom that reduces overall maintenance costs and blends into the natural environment without the use of an invisibility cloak.
