Ignite Fitnez has everything you could ask for from a gym, including plenty of airy space for weightlifting and one-on-one coaching sessions. To slow down their pumped-up pulses, members can enroll in yoga classes that relax the mind and body. Other classes include kickboxing, martial arts, and weight training. The parks frequented by Austin Outdoor Gym reinvigorate exercisers with fresh air and picturesque scenery that can't be experienced in a stuffy, packed gym. Using TRX suspension-training equipment, groups follow the lead of certified trainer Kyle Gibson as he performs exercises that challenge core muscles. Rather than racing through reckless, rapid-fire reps, he emphasizes proper form to help prevent injuries and to maximize the effectiveness of the workout. Kyle's one-on-one sessions help clients strive toward specific fitness goals, such as improving conditioning, shedding inches, or bulking up scrawny hitch-hiking thumbs.

With it's certified trainers and encouraging group classes, Fit and Fearless gives folks an alternative to impersonal box gyms. And people have noticed. The studio opened in 2002 as a Krav Maga training facility, and by 2005 it had won a contract to teach 1,000 U.S. servicemen in the technique. Along the way, it started a CrossFit program and has since earned plaudits from Austin Monthly Magazine as the city's best CrossFit facility.

Today, the studio has opened a second location and added Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to the roster of Krav Maga and CrossFit. During CrossFit classes, groups build functional strength with the Workout of the Day. The rotating regimen often includes everything from weightlifting and gymnastics to hard-hitting bursts of cardio. During Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, instructors take the anxiety out of learning martial arts by encouraging students to learn at their own pace. Krav Maga, on the other hand, focuses on self-defense, teaching folks how to straight-up bone bust their way out of violent and threatening situations.

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

The best thing about Fortitude are the workouts. They incorporate key principles from CrossFit, keeping them constantly varied, but also challenging the athlete to push themselves mentally and physically. We create a friendly and supportive atmosphere so that even tough workouts make you feel successful and accomplished, leaving you ready to take on anything that comes up in life.

What is the biggest mistake you see people make when trying to get fit on their own?

When people workout on their own, they often have a difficult time really challenging themselves and seeing the results they are hoping for. With the right fitness program, you can exercise, have a life, and see the progress you want for your body. Plus, having a group environment helps to keep up your morale and encourages you to show up, because you feel accountable to the friends you make at the gym.

Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?

Music is really important when you workout. And everyone in Austin has an opinion about music. That's why we take requests from our athletes and build workout playlists from their suggestions. We're all about giving you the best workout possible and the best environment to do it in.

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

We give people free Bat City branded swag and permanent discounts just for having good attendance at no extra cost. For example, six workouts earns one koozie; 15 workouts earns one water bottle; and 21 workouts earns a free t-shirt. If you hit large milestones like 100 workouts, we give you a permanent discount of 10% off and your picture on the wall of fame. We put every single athlete's personal record on the board so they can see themselves constantly getting stronger and faster. It also helps coaches to know exactly what each athlete's stats are. Workouts are constantly varied?but not random?and focused on getting stronger and faster in a safe environment. We also give people free membership to Beyond the Whiteboard so they can track their workouts.

Do you run your gym according to a particular exercise philosophy?

CrossFit is constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity. Safety is our number one rule. You start by learning technique, then you gain consistency, and then you can apply intensity. It's not always easy to go to a large, faceless gym by yourself with no coach to build a program that's right for you. While one or two coaches runs each class, participants support and root for each other. The last person to finish a workout is just as important as the first person to finish a workout. You can compete against each other, or you can just compete against yourself. Everything is scalable, and we have athletes of all ages and fitness levels. Also, everything is measurable, so you'll see yourself getting better every day.
