Eighty-four hitting stations spread out over two decks. Ten target greens, each one mapped out so players know the precise distance to each flag. Eight hitting bays equipped with TrackTee technology that charts the spin rate and distance of each shot. These are the practice resources that help golfers hone their swing—and learn more about their game—at Valley Golf Center. Named one of 2013's top 50 standalone facilities in America by the Golf Range Association of America, the practice facility also encompasses a 5,000-square-foot putting green and a practice bunker for players to hone their touch around the green. From 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, fans, misters, lights, and shade protect players against the elements of heat or the darkness of night. The center also hosts PGA lessons and a fitting center.
Designed by golf course architect Red Lawrence, Tres Rios Golf Course plots a 6,846-yard path through the lush foliage of Estrella Mountain Park. The 18-hole course is populated with budding eucalyptus trees and relatively sparse groves of mesquite and pine trees. The unique layout showcases a stark contrast in terrain, with desert outcroppings and rolling foothills that surround the emerald fairways and greens. Stretching 471 yards, the par-4 13th hole presents a challenging dogleg left where sentient tree branches gobble up tee shots that drift into the rough on the right. Golfers can prepare for the round by warming up swings at Tres Rios's grass driving range or putting and chipping balls at the practice green.

Feats of wheel-based athleticism flourish at American Made Ride Shop, where staffers stock bikes, skateboards, and sporty accessories and apparel. Not Cal Clothing and Rath Industries tees and hoodies shield bodies from weather or falling bits of sky as they zoom down boulevards atop DK bikes or beach cruisers. Bmx tires and seats transform personal cycles into pro two-wheelers, and Bucky Lasek helmets guard noggins in case of a spill. The shop’s bike techs back up their sales with detailing services that guarantee safe, smooth excursions, erasing damaged caused by years of off-roading or popping wheelies in tar pits.
A student of martial arts since 1974, Master Tim Elliott employs the skills he has acquired to help boys and girls build confidence, strength, and discipline. A supportive faculty of black belts and orange girdles call mini kickers to the mats from 9 a.m. to noon for introductory lessons in the Korean martial art of Tae Soo Do. The low student-to-teacher ratio of 6 to 1 ensures that trainees develop a reverent attitude toward their developing talents along with nuanced instruction in self-defense. Legs brace bodies as feet soar during standing, jumping, and spinning kicks; arms rocket forward in various grabs at undefended wrists and ice-cream cones. The camp concludes with a graduation ceremony and a certificate to celebrate each student's increased flexibility, confidence, and passing resemblance to Jean Claude van Damme.
