Ben Chen has experienced his share of success in his nearly 30-year photography career?his work has been published in such publications as Cosmopolitan, The Los Angeles Times, and ESPN Magazine, and he has lent his expertise to some of the nation's largest corporations, including Procter & Gamble and The American Red Cross. In 2006, the photographer began to notice that more and more novices were purchasing complex DSLR cameras, and that gave him an idea. Chen decided to share his wealth of knowledge with aspiring photographers by creating the 4-Hour Newbie Photography Boot Camp, which teaches students how to shoot manually with their DSLRs and create artistic, professional-quality photos. Since then, more than 5,000 students in 20 cities throughout the country have benefited from these classes. In 2013, he acquiesced to student demand and created Part II of the class, which goes beyond photography basics by diving into post-production techniques. Nowadays, students can take both Part I and Part II in the same day, helping them go from student to master in less time than most action-movie montages.
Harnessing yourself to a rope and rappelling into a canyon is challenging enough--but what if on the way down, you run into a waterfall? Since 1999, ATS AdventureWorks has prepared students for exactly this type of outdoor challenge, with courses in canyoneering, mountaineering, and rock climbing. Adventurers can also try their hand at these vertical sports on the company's indoor ropes courses, or on guided trips to rock formations and climbable celebrity homes throughout Southern California. The company's veteran team oversees every outing and class, keeping novices safe and sharing tips on gear and safety. And even when they're not working with students, they're navigating rough terrain and setting up specialty TV rigging for shows such The Amazing Race, The Bachelor, and The Biggest Loser.
A gallery of masterpieces showcases stunningly virtuosic renderings—which are especially impressive considering they were created by kids. While fostering a friendly, cheerful atmosphere, instructors teach classical art skills to classes of up to 12 students at a time. During weekly classes, the skilled instructors demonstrate how to realistically illustrate animals, figures, and still-life scenes using traditional media. "Creativity follows mastery" is the KidsArt philosophy, so they designed the sort of program they imagine the old masters would have approved. Planting graphite sticks and paintbrushes in pupils' hands, instructors teach color mixing, show students how to break an image into its component parts, and instill necessary behaviors such as focus and patience. Programs include individualized drawing and painting lessons and special-topic workshops, such as clay sculpture, figure drawing, and Anime/cartooning.

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
First by offering them a non-intimidating atmosphere. I have personally seen a much higher rate of success when a new member starts out using a good personal trainer. A good certified trainer will help you avoid injuring yourself, keep you accountable and motivated, help you select good food choices by designing a healthy meal plan, and keep you on a path to success through their expertise and experience while having fun.
What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?
I have seen quite a few people lose between 100 to 200 pounds and make some amazing transformations. I have also seen clients gain significant amounts of muscle while losing body fat, but if I had to pick one I would pick a trainer who works at World Gym. He recently decided to enter a men's physique competition and weighed around 240 pounds and needed to drop at least 40. He trained very hard and became very serious about his diet. After four months he had dropped over 50 pounds and looked fantastic with 5% body fat. Through the process he had great energy and never got moody because he was still able to eat a good amount of food while shedding the pounds.

We are also a smaller neighborhood type gym that has people from all walks of life. We are never overcrowded and you never have to sign up for treadmills like some of the bigger box clubs.
