Terrio Therapy-Fitness, a physical-therapy and fitness center, constantly looks to its mantra, “there has to be a better way,” when helping patients and the local community deal with problems. That’s why it creates custom therapy and fitness programs, why it developed two pediatric centers that cater to children with disabilities, and why it has expanded from one small outpatient clinic to 12 clinics throughout the area with 35 physical, occupational, and speech therapists.
Though the staff primarily cater to sports injuries, the range of services has evolved to treat both adults and kids with a variety of therapies, such as occupational and speech therapy, teaching kids and adults how to deal with pain or say “my name is Sharon” in Esperanto. The centers’ fitness facilities build muscles through group classes such as Pilates, fencing, and sports-specific skills training, and personal-training sessions provide one-on-one workouts with exercise gurus such as Steve Sobonya, who has trained Olympic gold-medal winners. In order to further aid in weight loss, Terrio Therapy-Fitness’s nutrition experts offer metabolic testing and personal consultations to discuss nutrition goals and why eating bacon for every meal and snack is a bad idea.
Dr. Douglas Brooks, D.C., a practicing chiropractor in Bakersfield for more than 24 years, and his staff offer an array of chiropractic services, helping to relax sore backs and realign the bones in the spine. Dr. Brooks specializes in chronic pain, lower back problems, headaches, migraines, and neck pain. A staff of specialists also aids in sculpting and slenderizing the physiques of clients, whether through recommended dietary changes or organic anti-cellulite body wraps and vibration sessions. During each of these 60-minute procedures, a staffer sheaths the patient in an herbal solution that burrows deep into the dermal layer, helping to banish inches and break down stubborn cellulite. Detoxifying properties aim to flush toxins and impurities from the underlying tissue. Dr. Brooks's team of massage therapists perform Swedish and deep-tissue massage to help relieve stress and invigorate the body as well as the mind.
Empire Eye & Laser Center operates under the watchful eyes of Drs. Joseph and Daniel Chang, brothers who each boast highly accomplished professional backgrounds. Joseph currently serves as Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology at UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute, demonstrating current methods of cataract surgery and banging erasers together for the school's resident surgeons. Daniel, a former chief resident in ophthalmology at Emory University, recently spoke at an international conference on lens implants and volunteers as a surgeon for his own foundation that accommodates patients with little or no insurance.
They, along with four other physicians and one laser aesthetic nurse, perform treatments from a menu divided into two sections: see better and look better. See better treatments tackle a range of ocular needs, from eye exams for kids and adults to LASIK surgery for patients such as MLB pitcher Colby Lewis. Oculoplastic surgeries populate the look better section, as well as laser cosmetic treatments that decimate hair and signs of age.
