In 1868, a massive flood rolled down the Sierra Nevada Mountains, carrying tree after uprooted tree in its wake. Once the waters receded, those trees and the very confused squirrels hiding in them covered the Kern River valley. That's right where Thomas Barnes found them. So he cut them into logs and built a cabin from the ground up, then moved in with his wife and seven children. Today, that same cabin stands as one of the buildings within Kern County Museum's Pioneer Village.

The structures here are relics of several different times and places. Some came from old farms in the area, while others once stood on the main streets of towns?such as the Beale Memorial Clock Tower from old Bakersfield. While their original purposes have long since passed, the buildings still spring to life each time a visitor passes through. It's easy to imagine a blacksmith at work at the Calloway Ranch in the late 1800s, or the faithful tellers who saw The Kern Valley Bank through the Great Depression.

A different view of Kern County's history takes center stage inside the museum's other permanent attraction, Black Gold: The Oil Experience. Here, 9,640 square feet of exhibit space reveal how oil forms deep within the earth, as well as methods for its discovery and production. Other displays profile the workers and historical events that ultimately led to Kern County claiming 64% of California?s oil production.

During public skate sessions at SJCH Ice Center of Bakersfield, a SMG managed facility, staffers give experienced skaters a wide berth, but stay on hand to assist novices with the basics, including lacing up their skates and getting back up after taking a tumble on the ice.

Instruction continues at the skating school, where students of all levels and ages can enhance their skating skills during private lessons or 12-person classes with 12 free public skating sessions and progress reports after their first month. The climate-controlled center—always kept at below 60 degrees—also hosts 14-week youth hockey seasons and three divisions of adult hockey league, which accommodate recreational to top-tier players.

Along with action on the rink, SJCH Ice Center of Bakersfield keeps its pro shop stocked with figure skating and hockey apparel. The in-house technicians can spruce up skates with repair and sharpening services. After hockey games or skating practice, guests can reenergize with pizza, popcorn, and hot chocolate from the Slap Shot snack bar, which entertains visitors with video games such as Super Mario Goes Ice Fishing.

Instead of going to daycare when she was a little girl, Tatyana went to cosmetology school. Technically, her mother was enrolled in the classes, but Tatyana would tag along, thus beginning her first courses in her informal beauty education. Since then, her knowledge has only grown, what with working at a college of beauty, helping helm operations at a Beverly Hills skincare line, and continuing to learn through regular classes, world travel, and brain osmosis.

During her career in the industry, Tatyana has kept a philosophy that fuses Western technology with Eastern philosophy. It's a credo that views the spa not as a luxury but as a way of life, a preventive therapy meant to inspire an embrace of health. At her spa, Tatyana nurtures this idea with skincare services such as microdermabrasion and peels, body treatments such as sugar and salt polishing, and facial treatments that cleanse and exfoliate the skin that no longer serves you. Éminence Organics skincare products, Jane Iredale makeup, and other premium products line the spa's shelves, waiting patiently for a loving home.

The husband-wife team behind Salon Gianna founded the high-ceilinged spa space to fund research for rare childhood diseases after their daughter—the salon's namesake—was diagnosed with a congenital cell-growth disorder. The salon's aestheticians pamper guests with a range of services and use the proceeds to support work at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute. Éminence organic facials nourish skin with ingredients both potent and natural, such as the clear-skin facial's probiotic yogurt mask or the paprika and fruit-acid exfoliant of the anti-aging facial.

Invigorating scrubs and body wraps extend skincare to the entire physique, reenergizing skin as much as jogging through a coffee storm. Massage therapists lull tense muscles into a relaxed state with deep-tissue and Swedish techniques, and nail technicians dress up hands and feet with chic Rockstar toes or long-lasting shellac polish. Stylists can customize tresses with new hues and cuts or remove unwanted strands during waxing sessions.
