Only fair-trade, shade-grown organic coffee is roasted in-house at High Grounds, where a brand-new roaster transforms beans into liquid treats using dark magic. Percolate each morning with a two-shot latte ($3.66), or buzz through the day with a regular drip coffee ($1.54). Adding to the aromatic drinks is the pungent scent of free high-speed WiFi, which permeates the air and creates the ideal atmosphere for studying or grabbing a latte before work. As a testament to its quality, High Grounds' house-roasted coffee can also be found out of house in retail outlets such as Whole Foods.

Cup Love cools off tongues with classic low- and non-fat frozen yogurt in flavors such as strawberry and vanilla, salty caramel, cake batter, and cookies and cream. Its self-serve machines also dole out creamy Fage Greek frozen yogurt. As a result, Cup Love was voted to have some of the best fro-yo in Baltimore by CBS in 2012.

The shop further satisfies sweet teeth with housemade cupcakes in flavors such as coconut, banana-toffee, and s'mores. Many of the cupcakes are gluten free, low in sugar, and made with multigrain flour, resulting in a dessert that's both healthy and tasty, unlike dark-chocolate-covered peas.

Within a neon interior reminiscent of a 1950s diner scene, Boulevard Diner's menu packs in an extensive collection of nostalgic noshes alongside tasty international munchies. Dinner items such as homemade meatloaf ($11.95) or a 16-ounce broiled new york strip steak ($20.95), both accompanied by potatoes and veggies, make for a meal more American than working an unpaid internship. Midday hunger twinges dissipate into happy thoughts with a greek burger's 7-ounce beef patty, feta cheese, onion, and tomato ($6.75+), and the Neptune sub ($9.35) cradles a bed full of succulent fried shrimp snuggled up to a blanket of coleslaw and cocktail sauce. Offering large portions for every edible item, Boulevard Diner also beefs up its comestible cornucopia with savory seafood, Mediterranean, and deep-fried fare.

Though he spent much of his life as a truck driver for the city, Shareef's true calling was cooking. But it wasn't until he resigned from his driving job that he took a leap of faith and opened his first restaurant. Shareef's business has since evolved from halal hot dogs and burgers cooked on a small grill at his first establishment to a full menu of Mediterranean-style wraps, sandwiches, and platters served at two namesake eateries. To anchor the menu, the grill's chefs pair tortillas, buns, and beds of lettuce with halal and kosher meats and vegetables sautéed in their own butter sauce and craft housemade desserts including sweet-potato-and-cheese pies from fresh ingredients. And regardless of what location you are dining at, Shareef and his staff aim to make their space inviting and their food consistent by making every order fresh.

And Shareef's diners aren't the only ones raving about the menu's healthy yet delicious Mediterranean cuisine. The mayor of Baltimore even took notice, presenting the eatery with a certificate of recognition for their "outstanding contributions and dedication to providing . . . families with nutritious, affordable food."
