Unfortunately, when it comes to getting fit, hard work is not enough. To reach their fitness goals, athletes need to know what kind of workouts will help them shed pounds or build up the bulky muscles needed to fill out a gorilla suit. Knowing this, Velocity Sports Performance’s crew of certified trainers leads clients through personalized workouts inside a sprawling 18,000 square-foot facility. There, they show guests how to master balance boards, power lift, and perform parachute sprints on Astroturf, depending on their agenda. Athletes with similar ambitions can be taught in group sessions including speed camp for kids aged 9–18, boot camp classes just for the ladies, and workouts designed for pros such as Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller.
At IS Tribe CrossFit, a team of qualified trainers help students of all skill levels and body types exceed their personal fitness goals with team-oriented workouts that build functional strength, endurance, and lean, rippling muscle. Rather than sentencing their classes to boring bouts on a treadmill, instructors keep their pupils engaged and ready to face any challenge with ever-changing interactive Workouts of the Day (or WODs), which include tasks such as flipping tires, hoisting barbells, and throwing weight machines into the sun. During one-hour workouts, members build bonds with their fellow trainees, pushing each other to crush their self-doubt and boost their confidence as they build muscle and burn fat.
Run by Stanford University's coaches' education trainer Mike Legarza and boasting a camper return rate of 90%, Legarza Basketball Camp develops young dribblers in a structured environment of positive support and fundamental basketball instruction, valuing hard work and effort. Morning camps focus on shooting and ball handling, as orb-bouncers will learn the basics of scoring and protecting the basketball. Players will be divided into teams for the week and play one game per day with a tournament at the end of the week. Afternoon camps concentrate on gameplay, as youngsters will be introduced to gamesmanship and strategy, such as when to feed the ball to the 7-footer in the post and when to feed the ball to the siberian tiger spotting up for a three-pointer.
Workouts at Davis Swim & Fitness aren't limited to one genre or even one terrain. Free weights, treadmills, and ellipticals wait indoors, and an outdoor training arena and 25-meter, temperature-controlled lap pool tempt athletes outside. Indoor group workouts include Pilates, spin, Zumba, Ripped, and yoga, although members are welcome to work up a sweat on the outdoor basketball court. Onsite childcare gives parents the freedom to pursue personal-training sessions or massage therapy.
The first time Marqus Crawford ever stepped onto a basketball court was as a freshman in high school. With a whole lot of hard work, Marqus went on to set records at his school and earned a scholarship to play in college. Eventually, he began sharing his wisdom as a coach. Over the last three-plus decades, Marqus has had stints coaching at San José State University, San José City College, and now at MC-Elite Basketball Training. There, Marqus emphasizes the fundamentals of the game, including ball handling, shooting, and basketball IQ. He improves the skills of both male and female players, offering training sessions in private, group, and team settings.
The extensive facilities of MVP Arena, which include indoor and outdoor fields, a basketball court, and batting cages, host visitors for an array of sports leagues and classes. Adults hone their skills in training classes and then unveil new maneuvers on one another during league games for basketball, flag football, and soccer. Bat wielders practice swing timing and charging the mound without fear of retaliation in the batting cages, where regulation pitching distance and a mural of the San Francisco Bay recreate the excitement of practicing in a big-league stadium. In addition, three of the cages feature virtual pitchers that help batters time ball delivery at different speeds or a random assortment of slow, medium, and fast.
