  • Roseland School of Dance
Like most good ideas, Gymboree Play and Music didn't begin in a business meeting?it began out of necessity. In 1976, Joan Barnes, a California mom, found herself frustrated with the lack of spaces where she could take her kids for safe and age-appropriate play time. Knowing that other parents were undoubtedly feeling the same frustration, she took matters into her own hands and founded Gymboree Play and Music. She consulted experts to design a curriculum of activities to foster the development of children?s cognitive, physical, and social skills through structured play. She hired a nationally renowned playground designer Jay Beckwith to design the proprietary play equipment at her centers. And her staff began conducting entertaining classes covering subjects ranging from music to sports to impart valuable lessons of imagination and physical activity to developing minds. As their children learned and socialized, parents also found benefit in meeting and befriending other moms and dads in their local area. More than 30 years later, her vision has proved to be a success: more than 712 child-centered franchises now spread over 42 countries, bringing confidence and creativity to thousands of youngsters in several continents and to one in the center of the earth.

  • The Long Island Maritime Museum
The Long Island Maritime Museum records, restores, and displays the history and story of life on the water of Long Island. The main building of the campus occupies the former Meadow Edge estate, and other historical nautical buildings from around the island have been transplanted to its grounds. These structures include exhibits such as the Wrecks & Rescuers exhibit, based on the annals of the United States Life-Saving Service. They also contain the Edward Smith Library of local nautical history and a collection of 19th- and 20th-century boat-racing trophies. The museum's prized possession does not reside on dry land, though. In the nearby harbor, a fully restored 1888 oyster sloop named Priscilla can still venture out into the bay for both public and private sails.

  • American Airpower Museum
The American Airpower Museum couldn't have a more appropriate setting. More than six decades ago, its grounds were home to Republic Aviation. Here, a formidable assembly line?nicknamed "the Jug"?churned out more than 9,000 P-47 Thunderbolts, which helped fortify the Air Force during World War II. Today, the American Airpower Museum displays Thunderbolts in honor of the brave pilots that flew them during those crucial years. And just like the dinosaur skeletons in a natural-history museum, these exhibits come to life?during warm months, Thunderbolts often taxi out onto the runway and take off to the delight of the crowd. The skies around American Airpower Museum showcase other prop- and jet-powered aircrafts dating from WWII to the present day. Ground-level exhibits, meanwhile, show off more aircraft and military vehicles, including tanks. The resident pilots even offer ride-alongs in an AT-6 or Waco aircraft. Visitors can also test the controls of a Cessna 310 for themselves inside a custom-built simulator.
