Rebel Race's military-style obstacle courses challenge athletes from all backgrounds to shed humdrum day-to-day routines to experience the primal joys of mud, sweat and glory. Emerging from the mire in various states across the country, each Rebel Race packs its rucksack with tests of physical and mental toughness, rousing racers and washing machines alike to triumph in the face of sloppy opposition. After dashing through fire, climbing walls, and scaling mountains of hay, race participants bask in the collective kudos of parties, which include live entertainment, food, and beer for purchase. Camping options encourage participants and spectators to transform races into weekend getaways, while awards recognize each day's standout competitors and most-humble mud pits.
Voted one of America's top-ten scream parks, Pure Terror horrifies hordes with four attractions. With a VIP pass, you'll skip lines and enjoy carte-blanche access to The Butcher Shop, Terror in the Dark, Trail of Terror and House of Terror, and Pat Boone's solarium. The Butcher Shop lures visitors into a macabre meat case managed by a blood-splattered butcher. In Terror in the Dark, you'll enter into a pitch-black, spinning tunnel where surprise shocks and lurking creatures scare the lint out of your bellybutton. Trail of Terror leads you on a tortuous path over bridges, through tunnels, and into caves filled with actors reading scenes from episodes of Dallas. The creepy culmination comes in House of Terror, where the power metal sounds of Charred Walls of the Damned assault your ears and a residency of monsters, freaks, and ghouls cordially invites you in for tea and finger sandwiches.
Palisades Climb Adventure presented by WonderWorks lays claim to the title of the world's tallest indoor ropes course, and you might not feel like arguing with them when you're 85 feet above the ground. Guests traverse 75 different obstacles that test the climber's mettle, whether they're trying to balance while walking across tremor bridges, maintain their grip on the rope ladder, or fight back the urge to eat the alternating spaghetti handline. Once an adventurer is buckled into the safety harness, they can leap, totter, and dangle through the entire course with the option to leave at any time. The only requirements are a minimum height of 3'6" and a maximum weight of 300 pounds.
At The Cliffs at Valhalla, professional setters map out more than 200 new climbs every three months. It’s part of the gym’s mission to keep routes as challenging and engaging as those found outdoors.
Though ideal for skilled climbers, the gym caters to first-timers too. Certified instructors lead adult classes in climbing basics. Staff members guide customers to the proper gear and yodeling song books at the pro shop, and they even created a fitness area with climbing-specific cardio training equipment and yoga classes to complement the climbing terrain.
The Cliffs at Valhalla also readies kids for climbing. Climbing camp lets kids experience indoor and outdoor climbing, and award-winning birthday parties furnish groups with private climbing walls and a 1:5 instructor to student ratio.
Helmed by a team of passionate climbing coaches, both of The Gravity Vault's locations surround climbers with more than 13,000 square feet of climbing space. Walls tower past 35 feet, mimicking such natural rock formations as overhangs, keyhole arches, and slabs, and bouldering areas challenge climbers with a latticework of problems that?unlike most of life's?can't simply be solved with dynamite and a pair of roller skates. Visitors can choose from up to 60 top-rope stations, trusting either the trained staff or a certified fellow climber to man the ropes while they scramble to the summit. When not dangling from a hold or saving lost kittens from a rappel ledge, members can bulk up in the cardiovascular-training area.
The 50-mile-per-hour speeds of Zoom Ziplines’ four lines may feel dangerous, but that’s just an illusion. Daily inspections by staff members ensure safe, smooth trips for all customers who meet height and weight requirements. During two-hour trips, customers cross a suspension bridge on foot and fly down four ziplines that stretch up to 1,400 feet, breathing in mountain air and taking in stunning vistas. The course’s tandem ziplines allow friends to race or merely enjoy side-by-side views of the lake, local wildlife, and clouds playfully contorting themselves into the shapes of former presidents.
