A historic mural spreads across a wall inside Monteaux's Public House. A visual interpretation of Oregon history from the early 1800s to the late 20th century, the hand-painted work depicts trolleys and buildings, local farm culture, and travel by railroad and balloon. The mural itself has been there for more than a decade: it marks one of the first steps the four founders took to decorate their restaurant, an ode to the centuries-old tradition of the American public house.
Monteaux's Public House also preserves culinary traditions by preparing good old-fashioned food and folding napkins into the shape of Benjamin Franklin's hungry face. The menu features meals both American and foreign, but everything's made from seasonal, local ingredients when possible. Entrees of marinated flat iron steak and wild salmon fillet join house specialties such as Cajun prawn ?touf?e and halibut fish and chips. The bar's taps, meanwhile, pour several rotating Oregon beers. And whether dining inside or on the dog-friendly patio, visitors can utilize the pub's WiFi.
Upon wandering into Spints Alehouse and seeing the plates of schnitzel and Bavarian-style pretzels, visitors might assume they’ve been magically transported to a German pub. But after scrambling to produce their passports, they realize that a slice of Germany has come to them, not the other way around. In true European tradition, diners feast on selections from a seasonal menu chock-full of spaetzle, a german pasta, and pork schnitzel before washing them down with carefully crafted mead cocktails that attracted the attention of the New York Times. As in kitchens across the Rhineland, desserts revolve around rich flavors such as those found in the likes of chocolate-almond layer cake and butterscotch pudding, and just like in the Rhineland, they must be eaten from a knight’s helmet.
Breakside is the devout brewchild of passionate draft masters Scott Lawrence and Tony Petraglia. The in-house microbrew list includes the Breakside Wit, a 5.2% ABV Belgian-style wheat beer; the Belgian chocolate stout, a 5.8% ABV beer with dark flavors infused with Belgian yeast; and a hearty helping of other local beers. The food menu pays homage to the plentiful Northwest by using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible—cheeses are crafted by Tillamook and Rogue Creamery; beef is antibiotic- and hormone-free Country Natural Beef, pork is raised in the Willamette Valley by Carlton Farms; and bread is baked by Grand Central Baking Company. Sip homemade soups, play tug-of-war with eclectic appetizers, chomp into sandwiches, burgers, and wraps, or tear apart saucy ribs and chicken. While you sip or sup, let your imagination wander around the simple, yet refined, details of the massive, open dining room, or let it narrow down reasons the dinosaurs went extinct.
Hawthorne Hophouse’s gleaming silver taps serve as a temporary home for an ever-rotating collection of microbrews and small-batch craft beers brewed throughout the Pacific Northwest. Grab a seat at the bar and swig a dozen 2.5-ounce samples from local and upstart breweries such as Boneyard, Coalition, and Natian. Diners choose between the first dozen or second dozen of the 24 beers on tap, signing up their tongues for sweeping snippets of porters, IPAs, and ales. With two Groupons allowed per table, beersplorers can take the flight with a spirited co-pilot who can help them to detect fruit notes, offer contrasting critiques, and determine the ratio of international bittering units to raised eyebrows. Between samples, diners cleanse palates with a large plate of poutine—a spread of fresh-cut fries awash in vegetarian gravy and cheddar curds. Alternatively, diners can swap out poutine for a large plate of belgian fries sidekicked by tomato chutney (a $6 value).
