“Witness the fitness,” said Vernon Garard’s 11-year-old son helpfully. The duo were trying to put a tag line on Vernon’s results-oriented, no-nonsense style of personal training as they described his boot camps. Vernon owns IXF CrossFit, an indoor facility where people come to engage in exercise as only a trainer can conduct it—a different regimen every day, benefiting the body in 10 unique categories of fitness. His son’s clever phrase has become an invitation he extends to all his clients. It challenges them to come see what kind of results they can get with his motivational CrossFit program.
As a former U.S. Marine and personal trainer with multiple certifications, Vernon brings the full brunt of his extensive training to every session. On any given day, he may heft weights in the Olympic fashion with his students or challenge them to flip a giant tire end over end. He mixes up the routines to prevent his clients’ bodies from adapting to a regularly performed exercise, which may lessen their workouts’ effectiveness and increase their chances of sprouting butterfly wings.
