The men's and women's teams at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi storm lanes and drain buckets as they face off against the rest of the Southland Conference during the 2012 season. Head Coach Robert Robinson plans to help his women's squad rebound from last year's setbacks and return them to 2010's deep run to the conference-tournament final. Junior guard Jessica Jammer paces her sneakered mates by dropping points that frequently total in the double digits, helping expand both the dreams and counting skills of aspiring athletes in the stands.
A nonprofit community venture, the Aurora Arts Theater strives to enrich the Corpus Christi area by providing live performances that showcase the talents of local artists. Based on the book by Terrence McNally, The Full Monty follows the au-naturel aspirations of a group of unemployed steel workers in Buffalo who concoct an unlikely money-making scheme after taking note of their wives' captivation with male strippers. As the story and the wardrobe unfurls, the men discover the importance of friendship and regular waxes while renewing self-esteem and reclaiming control over their destinies.
Seven regional masters of illusion convene to baffle delighted audiences in the Maniacs of Magic show. Affable cut-up Roman Garcia, seen most Fridays on KENS 5’s Great Day SA, plays ringmaster to an eclectic cast of charmers and enchanters, each with a talent of pulling the wool over the naked eye. Alexander the Greatest regales the crowd with card-deck stratagems and his ability to pull coins out of the ears of George Washington quarters. Jonah Garcia translates his street tricks to the stage, and Doug Gorman performs parlor magic with mystical trinkets such as silver cups and carnival dice. Puppets spring to life in the hands of ventriloquist Joe Libby, and John O’Bryant, known by his maiden name, The Magic Dork, performs inspirational and educational trickery. Comedian Tim St. John splits sides with unscripted antics and has been recognized for his ability to escape a straitjacket while riding a unicycle. Concluding the mirthful marathon of mystery, slight-of-hand card mechanic Richard Turner, The Cheat, shows audiences how to get stalked by Vegas pit bosses.
Dancers, black belts, and trained yoga gurus, the instructors at The Synergy Studios come from all walks of life. They each bring a different approach to overall wellness to the school. Classes take place in the historic Pearl brewery in studios with soaring cathedral ceilings and honey-hued hardwood floors.
Zumba sessions fill the room with the rumble of moving feet and quick breaths. Contented sighs drift out during meditation and yoga courses, which balance physical fitness and relaxation and help contribute to overall wellbeing. Some sessions are designed for particular groups, such as athletes, expecting mothers, and groups who always have to stick together because of what they saw in a mysterious cave.
The academy's roster of instructors dispenses private and group education on diverse instrumentation during their 30-minute one-on-one music lessons and 45-minute Kindermusik sessions. Euphonic apprentices can open up their epiglottises in voice lessons, strum away on guitars, or prepare to marshal their army of G.I. Joes by beating some drum skins. Lessons are also available on the piano, as well as band and orchestra instruments. All students except drum and piano pupils must supply their own instruments for use during lessons, where they will learn a curriculum geared to their individual goals and interests. The academy's extensive library of method books imparts the techniques to tackle any style of music and teaches students to read music so that they're able to interpret the plot lines of Mozart's romance novels.
Despite their determinedly of-the-moment sound, Redfoo and Sky Blu are carrying on a long pop lineage: the former is Motown founder Berry Gordy's son, the latter his grandson. As red-hot electropop duo LMFAO, the uncle-nephew pairing electrifies dance floors with manic odes to party life. The 2012 Sorry for Party Rocking tour explodes with fan favorites such as "Party Rock Anthem" and newer hits such as "Sexy and I Know It," which has a bouncy swagger that dominated the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 28 weeks. Meanwhile, the band parades in neon animal prints amid backup dancers, bobbing beneath giant robot heads, tossing inflatables into the crowd, and creating a spectacle Metro Weekly calls "enormously entertaining."
