At Bel Air Billiards Sports Pub, colorful spheres clatter and roll across eleven tables, which include 7-foot bar-box units and 9-foot Olhausen models. Tucked away from the smooth trajectory of cues and the wild arm gestures of dishonest fishermen, a scattering of tables boosts patrons as they sip beers by the glass or bottle and nosh on sandwiches and other finger foods. From the kitchen, one can hear hot oil crackling in applause as wings leap beneath shelves brimming with Old Bay and more than 20 spicy, barbeque, and mustard-based sauces. Ten high-definition plasma televisions situated around the perimeter flicker with images from live sports or public apologies to knocked-over hurdles, and karaoke nights flesh out the chatter with raucous choruses.
To get a sense of The Greene Turtle's commitment to the neighborhood, one need only sit at the bar and look up. Dozens of mugs hang above the counter, emblazoned with the pub's logo and a unique number—each one belongs to a recurring patron. The Mug Club awards its members with draft-beer discounts and other specials, but more importantly, it allows loyal patrons to feel as though they own small slices of the venue without tattooing their names on the bartender's arm. This sense of shared familiarity is what fuels the entire franchise, which refrains from calling its locations "restaurants" in favor of friendlier terms: gathering places, communities, havens.
Many of the locations contribute more than mugs to their districts. Staff members who participate in the annual Tips for Tots program donate the entirety of one day's tips to a nearby Toys for Tots initiative, and Tuesday Funds for Friends events benefit local organizations. The steak and chicken entrees arrive with classic sides of green beans and yukon gold mashed potatoes, whereas the eastern shore mac ‘n’ cheese updates a comfort staple with chopped bacon, lump crab, scallions, and Old Bay seasoning. Sully’s strives to keep it classy. With a clean-comedy policy and a two-monocle dress code, the club hosts a lineup of regular and traveling comedians who have honed their timing everywhere from Comedy Central to HBO to Last Comic Standing. Winner of the 2011 World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas, Ryan Dalton takes the mic on August 17 and 18, opining with in-your-face glee on the health risks of exercise and vegetables, and the best way to inform someone they are not a triceratops. Also taking the stage is Nick Cantone, who transforms his mustache into comedy gold by meditating on its effect on his dating life and the sophistication it embodies. While laughing along, audiences can munch on classic pub eats or sip signature cocktails such as the Silly Sully, a blend of Malibu rum, blue curacao, and pineapple juice.
Sipping Pretty acts as a conduit to the world of wine, welcoming customers with wine tastings and educational classes. Its mobile tastings follow a curriculum centered on the four S's of wine tasting and succeeding as a talking police dog: see, sniff, sip, and summarize. Each tasting showcases critically acclaimed wines that tasters can pair with meat and cheese from included snack platters. Seminars offer an alternative way to explore wine, delving into not only the art of tasting but how wine is made and questions of etiquette surrounding its consumption, such as which vintages are best served with a curly straw.
The menu at Piv's Pub & Restaurant includes a variety of seafood and classic American cuisine alongside a hefty list of draft beers and craft bottled beers. An ever-gracious hostess, the vegetable du jour accompanies many entrees to their respective tables, including the jumbo-lump crab cakes, served over grilled tomatoes ($17.99 single order, $24.99 double order), and the juicy filet mignon with homemade mashed potatoes ($22.99). The shrimp salad ($9.99) is pleased to attend the table alone or with the companionship of a baked potato and onion rings ($4.99 each) from the à la carte menu.
