The Studio at Painful Pleasures isn’t your standard piercing parlor. The 5,000-square-foot showroom has five fully furnished studios, each with their own TV and comfortable TatSoul chairs, as well as an educational center where they hold classes on piercing techniques. Hyperrealistic, ethereal, and vibrantly colored artwork designed by the in-house artists covers the walls—a testament to the detailed work they do. The team is also complemented by two resident tattoo-removal specialists who have mastered the art of buffing off unwanted images, such as the tally marks on your arm that remind you how old you are.
Walls bedecked with vivid artwork make known the heart of Pride & Glory, an artist-formed tattoo and piercing studio, as dedicated to the history and tradition of tattooing as it is to the future of the form. The skilled staffers bring with them artistic backgrounds in painting, sculpting, and invisible-ink portraiture, and pair their well-practiced trades with an impressive stock of body jewelry and after-care products. Free consultations encourage guests to thoughtfully plan their ink, and hundreds of flash-art designs cater to patrons in search of inspiration.
The artists at Westside Ink uphold the workmanship and safety practices of the Alliance of Professional Tattooists, adhering to high standards in sterilization and studio cleanliness. This lets guests relax and focus on articulating the kind of tattoo they want. Westside's services also extend to other modes of body art, including permanent makeup, body piercing, and tattoo removal.
Karen Laing has followed her love for beautification down many paths, including attending school for aesthetician studies, acting as both beauty queen and pageant judge, and her current profession as a permanent-makeup artist. She meticulously draws on individual eyebrow strokes or enhances peepers with permanent eyeliner with the experience that comes not only from her extensive training, but also from having permanent makeup herself. In addition to makeup, Karen also individually bonds synthetic eyelashes to natural ones to create more lush and dramatic blinks, and treats signs of aging with wrinkle-reduction, sunspot-reduction, and other anti-aging therapies.
The Hole Story's owner and piercing and tattoo artist InkBoy The Don is truly a self-made professional. He started sketching in high school, teaching himself composition and shading. As his prowess with the pencil grew, he began creating logos and drawings for clients. Eventually his desire to create permanent art led him to purchase a tattoo kit and practice the trade of body art, mostly on himself. Sure enough, after getting himself to agree to be his client, his customer base grew: first, family members requested some ink, then friends, and before long, people with whom he had no prior connection.
An eventual tattoo apprenticeship and a move to begin T-shirt printing and piercing solidified his status as a professional creator, making him a one-artist army at The Hole Story. Clients can come to the shop for a new eyebrow piercing or supplement their wardrobe with items from The Don's personal clothing line. The Don, of course, also adorns clients with colorful tattoos that celebrate special memories or remind them in which pocket they keep the car keys they hide from friends.
