Founded by Dr. Stephen Joffe and Craig Joffe, a father-and-son team who used LASIK eye surgery to correct their own vision, Joffe MediCenter has five locations across the country where expert ophthalmologists use advanced diagnostics to conduct each custom wavefront LASIK treatment. Treatment begins with a free, noninvasive examination with Bausch & Lomb Orbscan and Zywave mapping systems?derived from technology developed for astronomy and physics applications. They generate a 3-D model of each eye, which, like a fingerprint or favorite line from The Princess Bride, is unique to each person.

Upon assessing the results of the LASIK exam, doctors schedule the in-office treatment. During the procedure, the experienced LASIK specialist uses an excimer laser to gently reshape the cornea, which can improve vision to 20/20. LASIK reduces eyes' dependence on glasses and contacts regardless of whether clients suffer from nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. In most cases, the patient's vision improves rapidly enough to drive the following morning. After the procedure, doctors schedule a postoperative exam.

As a physical therapist, Carrie Moore worked to help patients rehabilitate their musculoskeletal injuries for five years. Throughout her practice, she noticed a troubling trend: a striking number of the dysfunctions were the result of insufficient or nonexistent fitness regimes. From this realization sprung RipQuest Boot Camp, Carrie's four-week offensive against sedentary lifestyles. Along with her staff of physical therapists and trainers, Carrie motivates groups of 20–30 toward lean and toned physiques via muscle confusion. This technique is based on fast-paced, dynamic workouts that target different muscle groups to prevent them from getting too accustomed to certain routines, thus rendering exercise ineffective. Tweaked to accommodate varying fitness levels, the boot camps rally sluggish bloodstreams with cardio, strength-training, speed, and agility exercises using a variety of fitness equipment. Patrons power through lunges to build solid quads, hurl medicine balls to bolster core and arm strength, and jump ropes for a calorie-annihilating burst of cardio. Boot campers should bring a water bottle, yoga mat or towel, jump rope, and hand weights or supportive gnomes that weigh 5 to 10 pounds.

Karen Mones's passion for fitness began at a young age, exercising to Jane Fonda videos with her mother. She went on to play softball, earn her bachelor's in exercise and sports science, and obtain six instructor certifications in everything from yoga to strength training. She founded Houston Adventure Boot Camp to share her knowledge and passion for fitness with as many people as possible.

She and her trainers create different regimens each day, taking advantage of the city's natural spaces and natural forces to enhance their workouts. They challenge gravity by having students lift their own bodyweight or free weights. Students plow through the heaviest friction the air can throw at them in sprints, and they hold up under constant pressure from the sun to nap in the middle of a field.

Treating symptoms is relatively straightforward. Addressing the underlying causes and promoting holistic wellbeing across the entire body is a more ambitious goal. As a licensed acupuncturist and practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine, John Shay attempts to accomplish the latter by channeling centuries-old treatments intended to locate and remove the blockages inhibiting the natural flow of the body's energy. The idea is that unrestricted energetic flow allows the body's natural healing mechanisms to operate at peak efficiency and not only relieve painful symptoms, but also prevent other conditions from arising in the future.

Originally born in Taiwan, Shay studied at the Chinese Culture University in Taipei before immigrating to the United States and obtaining a formal degree in acupuncture and oriental medicine. His approach to healthcare adopts a holistic focus, aiming to restore a sense of balance to ailing systems throughout the body. In addition to acupuncture, he also uses natural Chinese herbal medicines and cupping sessions to help ramp bodies back up to peak performance.
