Groups of tourists walk past the current dwelling places of some of the area’s notable residents, such as Addison Cairns Mizner, Paul Ilyinsky, and Henry Morrison Flagler. Unlike the case with traditional celebrity-sighting tours, however, all of these men died decades ago. Their spooky hauntings frame the path of Ghosts of Palm Beach’s walking tours, during which knowledgeable guides share local folklore and paranormal encounters. Stops can include everything from Palm Beach Town Hall to high-fashion shops such as Gucci, Chanel, and Saks Fifth Avenue, where the ghosts still try to buy handbags for a dollar and two bits.
At the tender age of 15, Jason Jacobs had taken up an unusual hobby: flying airplanes. Since the moment Jacobs first climbed into the cockpit, he has accumulated more than 9,500 hours of flight time, studied aeronautics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and captained both Gulfstream G400 and Falcon aircrafts. To share his passion for aviation with others, in 2008 Jason founded Jacobs Flight Services, a flight-training center and aircraft-management company. The FAA 141–approved flight school offers extensive flight training with both its fleet of expertly maintained aircraft and a computerized testing center. A flying club grants licensed pilots access to the fleet and facilities, and scenic tours send nonpilots zipping through the skies over Lake Okeechobee, where a retired Zeus passes the time grooming his prize herd of cloud animals.
Lion Country Safari is a zoo with no cages. Instead, more than 900 animals, including the largest zebra herd outside of Africa, roam its 320 acres freely. During drive-through safaris, cars tour seven sections of the preserve—which represent different areas such as western Zimbabwe and the Serengeti—to see llamas, asiatic water buffalo, chimpanzees, and white rhinoceros. Lions have a section all to themselves so that they don't prey on other animals or disturb them with giggles from the pride's late-night slumber parties.
In addition to the four-mile drive, Lion Country Safari's Safari World allows guests to explore rides and attractions as they visit with animals on foot. They can feed giraffes, practice animal-massage techniques at the petting zoo, or hop on the carousel next to Lake Shanalee's paddleboat rides. After kids splash through the interactive Safari Splash waterpark, they can hop onto the ferris wheel or ask exotic birds for advice on how to fly.
Elena Zabala first became interested in beauty as a child back in her native land of Cuba, where she took careful notice of how people groomed themselves. By 1980, she'd followed that childhood passion to a full-blown profession, attaining a certification in cosmetology and traveling the world to learn other cultures' beautifying techniques.
Since 1993, Zabala has owned and operated EZ Skin Care and Wellness Center, where she oversees the skin treatments she learned throughout her career. From weight-loss management to chocolate body treatments to HydraFacials, there is enough variety of treatments to totally transform clients before big events such as weddings or wallaby-smuggling stings. To help clients maintain the results of their treatments, Zabala stocks her center with skincare products, including a vitamin-rich cream of her own design called Noche. She works alongside her partner, Dr. Diosenis Hernandez, MD, a graduate of the University of Havana and University of Matanzas. Having previously worked as a general practitioner and ER specialist in her native Cuba, she continues to pursue her full US medical license while treating clients to a variety of massage therapies including rehabilitative therapy, hydrotherapy, shiatsu, reflexology, Swedish, sport, and PNF stretching.
Zombies created by an old factory’s chemical spill roam through the darkness, carnies banished for animal abuse and torture scream in the distance, and a murderous Santa greets visitors with a wicked grin and a bloody ax. These are just snapshots of the horrors awaiting visitors to Fright Nights at the South Florida Fairgrounds. Hair-raising creatures and the souls of murder victims lurk throughout four haunted mazes. At A Grim's Tale, grotesque creatures plucked straight from history's gristliest books lie in wait for unsuspecting readers. Sunnyvale Orphanage is overrun by terrible tots just looking for an excuse to misbehave... homicidally.
At the Smiths' terrifying new abode, screams echo over the sound of Morrissey records played backward, piercing the air of Country Bill’s Meat Market and joining shrieks coming from the midway itself. There, 13 rides, such as the High Flyer and Zero Gravity, whip passengers through the air. Food stalls nestle amid the attractions, tempting guests with hot dogs, tacos, funnel cakes, and tufts of cotton candy, which patrons can use as hair for the decoy body they place in their bed later that night.
