Silver Maple Farm's two-acre estate teems with furry friends on loan from owners. In two-hour play sessions at doggie daycare, pooches stretch their legs, breathe fresh air, and make new friends by checking other dogs' tail areas for trading cards ($28.50/day, $21.50/half-day). The facility is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each weekday so that Fidos can socialize while their human servants are off earning money and buying kibble.

Though most people hate the feeling of getting lost, that’s the point behind spending a day at the maze at Brookdale Farms. Not because the staff wants guests to wander aimlessly, but because the maze makes for a great way to enjoy the autumn sunshine at a relaxed pace and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Open as a family-friendly jaunt during the day and as a haunted attraction at night, the maze tests navigators’ skills and affords a rare view into how scarecrows live when they think no one is looking. Outside the maze, the farm offers other autumnal activities such as pumpkin slingshots, pony rides, adrenaline-pumping ziplines, and a hay jump, inviting families to spend a full day disconnected from their televisions, computers, and employer-mandated tracking devices.

At Baxter's K-9 Complex, pups explore and gallivant around a 4,000-square-foot indoor dog park loaded with obstacles courses and playfellows. Hounds visiting for doggie day camp sink teeth into chew toys, rummage through tunnels, and attempt to topple Olympic long-jump records from atop ramps. High-energy and moderate play areas divvy dogs into comfortable levels of playfulness, and rest areas facilitate naps, snacks, and polite debates over a warm brandy.

Since 1971, World Aquarium has stuck to its not-for-profit mission to protect marine life and promote the public's understanding of the aquatic world through educational programs, exhibits, and research. The aquarium unsurprisingly favors a hands-on approach; visitors often get close enough to high-five the flippers, fins, or pincers of many of its more than 10,000 animals.

Tour guides wind through exhibits on sea and freshwater animals, showcasing creatures such as sea turtles, sharks, stingrays, and fish from rivers and lakes around the globe. While peering into the faithfully reconstructed habitats, visitors absorb valuable information on how to conserve water, protect aquatic resources, and peacefully resolve conflicts between Siamese fighting fish.
