Two fields, a soccer shop, five indoor tennis courts, and an outdoor, heated pool. Those are just some of the amenities inside Sportstown Sports Complex, but it's also got something a little unexpected: its own sports bar. In the glow of TVs or outside on the hundred-seat patio, visitors to the kid-friendly Sportstown Tavern find brews, food, and detailed instructions on how long to wait before eating and swimming. If your thirst for competition isn't quelled by beers—or by the Thai curry mussels and housemade pizza—you can keep up the spirit of play with a game of pool or Texas Hold 'Em on Tuesday nights.
The waters of False Creek reach into the city of Vancouver like an arm. For years, the passage of water was used for industrial purposes, but all that changed in 1980 when the city of Vancouver decided to develop Granville Island. One of those developments was False Creek Community Centre.
Today, the centre fills False Creek with an array of recreational boaters, including kayakers, canoeists, dragon boaters, and whale surfers. Back on land, the facility boasts a pottery studio, a fitness centre, tennis courts, a water park with a large kid's area, and a talented staff of instructors who teach programs and classes for kids and adults alike.
Though Canada has traditionally been a hockey country, support for its national soccer teams continues to grow. The women's national team has been exciting fans coming off of a groundbreaking 2012 season, winning the Country's first summer Olympic traditional team sport medal since 1936. With this success, they have been awarded Team of the Year by the Canadian Press and CBC. The team continues to perfect their skills in the hopes of winning the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 that their country will be hosting.
Billed as the Ultimate Trisport Event, TruAthlete is a competition in which coed teams of 6-10 players each battle each other tournament-style in each of three sports: flag football, volleyball, and soccer. For each game, six team members will take the field at a time; two women must be in play at all times, and teams can have up to four substitutes on the bench. There are two levels of registration: Division I, which is for serious athletes, or Division II, a casual bracket for groups interested in socializing and finally figuring out how their feet work. The top two teams in each division take home prizes. The event takes place at Magnuson Park, where there will be beer pong and dodgeball for spectators and consumers.
Rijo Athletics—founded by former Mets player and current St. Louis Cardinals scout Jose Rijo-Berger—helps baseball and softball players and coaches polish up their craft with a variety of skill drills, camps, and hands-on practice sessions. Pitchers perfect not only their form and speed, but also their techniques for reducing injury risk, and batters develop their own unique swing pattern, whether they're a power hitter, contact hitter, or telekinetic hitter. Players perform their feats of athleticism in one of six indoor batting tunnels and on pitching mounds.
Rijo's athletic complex, which spans eight acres and includes a 9,000-square-foot indoor facility and an all-weather turf field, also hosts group clinics for other sports, including soccer, football, golf, and swimming. Its full weight room is designed for sport-specific training.
Taught by professional footballer savant Chochi Valenzuela—a 10-year professional and three-time All American at USC-Spartanburg who has coached at the youth, high-school, and college level—and his team of sinewy turf tyrants, Speed Trainers USA's soccer boot camp can not only help melt off any excess flab, it can build up your skills and technique like so many easy snap-in pieces of a massive Lego tower. Monday, Friday, and Saturday classes take place at Green Lake's Lower Woodlands Park, Field #2; for Wednesday and Sunday classes beginning June 6, head over to Redmond's Perrigo Community Park. The starting whistle blows between 6:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. on the weekdays, 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. on Sunday. Check the schedule for more information. Bring proper soccer regalia, a water bottle, and your own ball. Capri Suns and Rice Krispie treats are recommended for an after-practice treat.
