Licensed aesthetician and Bay Area–native Barbara Zaller didn’t always know massage therapy was her calling. After beginning her career as a dental assistant, then taking time off to raise her son, Barbara entered the professional fray once more. From her outpost at Butterfly Yoga, Barbara pampers clients with facials, customized peels, professional teeth whitening, massage therapy, and skin therapy. She swathes faces in luxe products from brands such as Dermalogica and DermaQuest, which she uses to treat acne, rosacea, and damaged skin. Her dexterous fingers ease stress from muscles during Swedish, shiatsu, deep-tissue, and sports massage. She performs specific body work on areas more annoying than a little sister’s obsession with megaphones and complimenting people's work ethics.
Theresa, the aesthetician at Rejuvinate & Eternity, came upon her profession after her own struggle with skin conditions led to regular visits with skincare professionals. Seeing how maintenance programs could reduce and prevent skin outbreaks, she took up skin physiology and chemistry and relayed her experience and knowledge into her own practice. Now, Theresa pares down signs of acne, stress lines, and loose pores with facials for women, men, and teens. She cites rejuvenation and relaxation as the goals of her practice and complements skincare regimens with hot-stone treatments that remove toxins and relax muscles bound up by tension and stress. Theresa also travels to her clients’ homes to perform facials for a convenient and private treatment.
Before establishing Rejuvenation Skin and Body Wellness, aestheticians Veronica and Oralia sharpened their aesthetic skills in the beauty industry for nearly a decade. During this time, which included a stint working as a skincare expert for Erno Laszlo, Veronica learned the ins and outs of microcurrent therapy, which she uses to firm aging skin. As for Oralia, she not only customizes skincare services, but also focuses on beautifying faces with makeup applications—a skill she honed while working for Stila Cosmetics and Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa. Both seasoned skincare specialists offer custom European facials, full-body waxing, and five different types of peels.
Fashionable makeovers and indulgent pampering collide inside of Royal Beauty Salon. Here, stylists craft sleek haircuts and reinvent hairstyles whose patents expired in the '80s. The staff uses wax to remove body hair from problem areas and leave the skin soft to the touch. And with a dazzling array of colored polishes at their disposal, nail technicians can narrow in on fingers and toes, shaping and dressing the nails and rewarding the hands and feet that support them with aromatherapy scrubs and warm-lotion massages.
At recently opened Rock Paper Scissors, owner and head stylist Kelsey Gallegos exercises artistic license over coifs, backed by extra training in Bumble and bumble, Redken, and AG hair products, to name a few. Her team of stylists boasts similar expertise in myriad specialties, allowing clients to pair up with an authority fitted to their needs. Beautifiers bend serums from AG, DermOrganic, and It's a 10 to their will as they shear and highlight tresses or sculpt one of their signature updos for wedding days or anniversaries with probation officers.
The salon's decor mirrors the creative whimsy with which staffers approach hair. Walls alternate between vibrant-yellow and deep-purple hues, complimented by a tree in bloom splashed across several paintings. Colorful abstract artwork emblazons other walls, one hung with a black-and-white photo of the vintage salon experience, which historically included black-and-white hairdos.
