Despite the adventure that the urban landscape of New York has to offer, some city dwellers can’t shake the itch to climb boulders, hike mountain trails, and surge through whitewater rapids. One group of New Yorkers decided to remedy this, organizing weekend retreats to places such as the Adirondacks and New Hampshire's White Mountains. As word of their adventures grew, more and more people asked to join, and thus began Outdoor Connections. Today, its guides lead outings for adventurers of all fitness levels, from a day of apple picking, hiking, and wine to full-moon hikes with campfire roasts and unabashed howling. Loading up large passenger vans, Outdoor Connections' team takes guests to places such as state parks and preserves in the Adirondacks and Catskills, as well as along the Hudson River Valley and Delaware and Lehigh Rivers.
Woodbridge Pools and Ski specializes in the recreational enjoyment of water in two of its fundamental states: chlorinated and powdery. During the summer months, it keeps pools cool and inviting with installations, filters, chemicals, and accessories. When the weather turns colder and locals trade in their Speedos for the slopes, the company unveils its inventory of employee-tested winter-sports equipment by brands such as Burton, Arbor, Flow, and DC, as well as rentals of Völkl skis and snowboards and professional tune-ups.
Opened in 1998, Floyd Hall Arena welcomes skaters of all sizes to practice their axels and slap shots on two NHL-sized ice rinks. In addition to youth hockey and Learn to Skate programs with professional instructors, the rink hosts public skating sessions each week so that casual skaters can loop the rink as their leisure and more advanced skaters can test out prototypes of hand skates. Patrons can take a look at upcoming public skating times by checking the monthly event schedule, found here.
Aspiring snow-surfers can choose one of the latter deals to learn about skiing or snowboarding survival during a 60-minute group lesson, lead by one of Ski Campgaw's highly experienced staff. Afterwards, newly trained students show off their new moves in the beginner's area, where two gentle conveyor lifts can tow them back to the top of the slope. Meanwhile, more advanced skiers can challenge themselves on black diamond slopes, difficult for its steep angles and pursuing suitcase salesmen on jetpacks, while brave boarders can navigate the ramps, rails, and half pipes of the freestyle Terrain Park. See here for up-to-the minute info on conditions and trail closings.
Since 1972, locals have entrusted their swimming pools and hot tubs to the experts at the family-owned Sahara Pools. The certified technicians are available for both seasonal and extended maintenance, whether clients simply need help prepping their pools for summertime or would like regular assistance with surface skimming, vacuuming, brushing, water testing, and chemical balancing. They also offer customized maintenance and pool renovations and repairs, and update chlorine sanitization systems to more eco-friendly (and skin-friendly) salt-based systems. Seasonal and extended maintenance plans can include water surface skimming, debris-vacuuming, emptying pump baskets, filter backwash, and visual and chemical inspections of the water.
Beyond offering top-notch service, Sahara Pools carries a wide selection of equipment—from robotic cleaning systems, filters, pumps, heats, and basic brushes—from reliable brands such as Raypack, Hayward, Polaris, Zodiac, Jandy, and Aquabot. Patio furniture, including umbrellas, propane fire tables, and chef-approved grills and smokers further promote backyard revelry.
At Tuxedo Ridge Ski Center, 25,000 acres of snow-dusted state-park landscape surround eight trails, inspiring riders with scenic views and mountainous sanctuary. Four double chairlifts escort skiers and snowboarders to the peaks of eight powdery slopes, which dedicated trail-sculptors and snowmaking machines have modified to accommodate riders of all ages, abilities, and postmodernist persuasions. A beginners' area helps snowsplorers find their mountain legs, and the black-diamond racing hill and freestyle park challenge skis and boards with steep slopes, kickers, and rails. The rental shop at the bottom of the hill outfits run-tamers with downhill essentials, and a rustic lodge and pub warms bellies and thaws tongues frozen to metal poles with an array of hearty après-ski treats.
