The Baseball Center NYC, Manhattan’s only full-service indoor baseball facility, supplies youth, teenage, and adult baseball and softball players with access to 15,000 square feet of batting cages, pitching simulators, and fielding areas. During a private lesson, professionals instruct athletes on how to strengthen hitting, pitching, catching, fielding, and flying techniques.
Hawthorne Theater was established in 1927, making it one of the first movie houses established in the area. And though at almost 90 years of age the space is older than most buildings in North America, it's recently undergone major renovations to keep up with modern technology. According to an interview with owner Jack Sayegh at NorthJersey.com, the fully digital five-screen cinema was outfitted with new carpeting and chairs, Real D and 3-D movie equipment, Dolby Surround Sound in all theaters, and human ticket-takers to replace the outdated robot ones. The article also cites that the theater––which has been independently owned since 1980––is maintained by Jack's father, uncle, and cousin, reinforcing its family-friendly nature.
Actor Jamie Hector has made a career playing bad guys: drug lord Marlo Stanfield on The Wire, criminal Benjamin “Knox” Washington in Heroes, and villain Lincoln DeNeuf in Max Payne. The real-life Jamie, however, has a much different agenda. As one of the three founders of Moving Mountains, he draws New York’s inner-city youth off the streets and into the theater in order to steer them away from negative influences, such as bullying, gangs, violence, and substance abuse. He and his team of industry mentors cultivate an ensemble of young performers, musicians, and writers who create original plays and short films that delve deep into their age group’s social issues while spreading strong positive messages. In Moving Mountains’ film studio, mentors train budding directors, photographers, and technicians to create and promote short films and promotional artwork with the aid of industry-standard equipment. The mentors and their most senior students also tackle social problems at the source by traveling to city schools to educate audiences on topics including bullying, sexting, and how to make good choices in education and personal relationships.
The sun skips off the top of the crystalline waters of the pool. Heat waves undulate over the ground, and though the trek from the shade of the picnic tables to the pool may seem far, the cool, blue waters more than make up for it. Bergenfield Swim Club's 150-foot L-shaped pool ranges in depth from 3 to 12 feet and boasts two diving boards and an accompanying fenced-in kiddie pool. Around the pool, a sand volleyball court and gas barbecues invite families to stay all day and enjoy the summer sun.
