The sharp crack of a wooden bat, the soft thumb of a catcher’s mitt, and the dusty smell of an umpire brushing off his seersucker suit; you’ll find the first two at Bash Sports Academy. The 12,000-square-foot revamped industrial space allows baseball and softball players to train year-round regardless of the weather. Though visitors can make use of Iron Mike pitching machines, Atec softball pitching machines, five batting cages, and a host of tees, bases, balls, and netted L-screens for batting practice, annual memberships grant unlimited access to the facility. Those seeking more personalized instruction can tap into the sporting wisdom and gum-chewing prowess of the seasoned staff, which includes a former head instructor at the Chicago White Sox training academy and one who manages both a minor league team and for Team USA.
The hustle and bustle of the city can’t touch the calm waters of Lake Michigan. There, on gently rolling waves surrounded by fresh breezes, Kayak Chicago hosts tours and lessons, and lets paddlers take to the waters on their own with rentals. Captained by Dave Olson, a kayaker for more than 20 years and outdoor educator for more than 10, the company entrusts certified instructors and guides with shaping the strokes of kayaking newbies. Their tours take aquatic explorers out on the lake at night to ooh and ahh over summer fireworks or along the Chicago River to survey the city’s renowned architecture and map out their next bank heist. The staff also plants patrons on standup paddleboards for introductory lessons or wave-top rounds of SUPYoga or SUPPilates.
Since 2001, Tennis on the Lake has fostered myriad fitness regimens and a sense of community through year-round programs for tennis, yoga, and cross-training. During all of the outdoor classes, instructors help students develop correct techniques while having fun and staying active. Tennis classes take place at several Chicagoland parks including Waveland Park, which allows outdoor adventurers to hone racket-wielding abilities while surveying lakefront scenery. During winter months, Tennis on the Lake rents snowshoes to guests interested in exploring nearby parks or perfecting roundhouse-kick court serves.
