As part of the University of Alabama, it makes sense that UAB Campus Recreation's nutritionist doesn't just dole out commands—she takes time to teach her clients, just like a good professor or wizard's mentor. In fact, Alex Cone balks at being thought of as the "food police" since nothing could be further from the truth. She works right alongside clients to create healthy, practical nutrition plans that aim to expand, rather than restrict, their current diet. She and the center's massage therapists also hold classes about nutrition and fitness.
The Barbarian Challenge pits racers against the elements, in the classical sense. In the airy outdoors, runners plunge into icy creek beds, crawl through mud pits, and conquer various man made obstacles in their quest to secure the fastest running time, or the simple bragging rights that come with finishing at all. The course covers 4.5 miles and many man-made obstacles, and the top finisher in men's and women's categories earns a replica of Conan the Barbarian's sword.
The challenging 10-mile Tough Mudder obstacle course was designed by British Special Forces to test all-around strength, endurance, mental determination, and camaraderie. Over the course of two and a half hours, participants will weave their way through a diverse terrain that boasts 19 demanding obstacles, including muddy trenches, underwater obstacles, high walls, slippery slopes, live wires, and a gauntlet of fire. Tough Mudder challenges the fittest of fit athletes, demanding mental toughness to match physical prowess—only 80% of entrants reach the finish line. After the event, participants receive a free beer provided by Dos Equis.
Presented by the Junior League of Montgomery, the 23rd annual Holiday Market's jingle bell call summons a myriad of local merchants and vendors from across the country to set up shop and vend festive holiday presents, home décor, and other seasonal treats. Guests can peruse vibrantly designed wares and women's attire from hue studio inc, or present hard-to-please house elves with an adorable gift from Pamala's Boutique. Feed collegiate rivalries with a copy of the Auburn University Cookbook, penned by Missy Mercer, or feed marital rivalries by picking up The University of Alabama Cookbook, penciled by her husband, Browne Mercer. On Friday, vendors put together a fashion show to highlight trends in seasonal style, and door prizes reward shoppers with magnificent gifts of doorknobs.
