When it comes to martial arts, Krav Defense founder and head instructor Anthony Santopadre has done it all. He began studying karate and judo 25 years ago, then earned his first and second black belts in the art of jujitsu. After 10 years of training, Santopadre decided to expand his horizons and belt collection yet again, studying for and receiving his third black belt in kung fu.
It was during his kung fu education that Santopadre discovered krav maga. The instinctive movements, practical techniques, and realistic training scenarios appealed to Santopadre, so he immersed himself in the discipline and became a certified level-three instructor through the Krav Maga Security Federation in Israel. He shares his ability to disable assailants and wrestle nuts away from squirrels in a variety of classes, including fitness-focused cardio sessions and ground-fighting classes that focus on takedowns and submissions. The techniques of krav maga are tools for self-defense that can be effectively carried out by men, women, and children.
Bethpage American Black Belt Academy focuses on two primary martial arts: judo—with a program in operation since 1963, now led by Thomas Dalvano—and kenpo karate, led by Eddie Spadaro. Lessons for kids and adults teach self-defense while conditioning body and mind alike. Kenpo classes help participants increase strength and coordination through techniques that use hands, knees, and elbows as weapons for self-defense.
Ultimate Gym's trainers first kicked open its doors in 1986, and their no-nonsense attitude toward hard work and smart training have endured since then. Trainers challenge students through cardio and muscle-toning drills in boot camps, yoga, and Zumba sessions, and a staff, led by coach Billy Reuter, uploads self-defense maneuvers into feet and fists in their Ultimate Fighting Solutions classes for kids and adults. Layered on a foundation of Krav Maga, which was developed and battlefield tested by the Israeli Defense Forces, the system blends moves from across the martial-arts spectrum to train people to defend against real-world scenarios. After churning out new muscles, guests can visit the onsite chiropractor to manage pain, recover from an injury, and turn their heads back toward the front after a boxing match.
Grand Master Yeon Hwan Park draws from experience gained while earning a ninth-degree black belt as he focuses students’ bodies and minds. At YH Park Taekwondo, he and a skilled team train pupils from beginner to black belt in the art of tae kwon do, a Korean martial art that teaches the duality of inner harmony and physical defense using fluid movements of the fists and foot fists.
Grand Master Park learned his skills in his native Korea, where he became the undefeated national tae kwon do champion from 1971 to 1975. He also served as vice president of the United States Taekwondo Union and coach of the U.S. Olympic and Pan American team. In addition to his practical mastery of the sport, Park has published 12 books on its theory, including Tae Kwon Do: My Life and Philosophy and Tae Kwon Don’t, How to Avoid Conquering the World.
For Dr. Jason Bart, Optometry isn’t just a career, it’s a family legacy. His father, Dr. Arnold Bart, founded Ultra Vision Optical in 1974 when Jason was just five months old. Growing up around the office, Jason was inspired to follow in his father’s footsteps, even attending his father’s alma mater, Pennsylvania College of Optometry, before joining his dad on staff in 2000. Today, he stands at the helm of the established business, bringing modern updates that include computer vision analysis, LASIK consultations, and the latest monocle styles.
A specialist in multi-focal fits, Dr. Bart performs all eye exams and contact fittings in-house, checking overall eye health while testing for diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. He then lets clients loose in the showroom, offering guidance as they choose from a selection of 1,500 frames that includes styles from top brands such as Michael Kors, Ray Ban, and Gucci. The shop also stocks a range of contacts to fit clients' needs, as well as a full line of eyeglasses accessories such as chains, cleaning products, and teeny, tiny bow ties.

Along with fellow tooth enthusiasts Dr. Lorraine Sirgany and Dr. Erin Thomas, Dr. Jeffrey M. Schwartz keeps smiles healthy, clean, and happy with regular checkups and polishings. An appointment begins with a gentle inspection, in which the dentist examines the mouth for tartar, gum disease, and forgotten passwords. Then, bitewing x-rays peek between the teeth and behind the enamel, where cavities sometimes lurk. The service concludes with a thorough cleaning to evict plaque and make pearly whites glow with pride. Like lunar eclipses, preventive visits last about an hour and can be scheduled for daytime, evenings, or weekends.
