Long Island Nail & Skin Care Institute president Dana Caruso juggles a busy schedule. When she’s not working behind the scenes at New York Fashion Week or appearing on Access Hollywood, she champions a science-based curriculum that helps students to master everything from makeup to laser services. Once students gain a sufficiently diverse skill set from the school portion of the center, they apply what they've learned inside the Institute’s spa. There, professionals supervise students as they perform facials, airbrush tanning, and body sugaring, a treatment mainly intended to attract mad hatters who run out of sweetener.
After 15 years, Unique Salon & Spa's dedicated staffers carry on with a large slate of services under their new collective moniker. A thorough spa menu is divided among categories of "beauty," "body," "soul." The "beauty" menu offers haircuts, color services, and makeup applications, prepping faces and hair for swanky appearances. "Body" services tend to fingers and toes, painting delicate colors over newly buffed nails or removing unwanted body hair with waxes. Meanwhile, "soul" offers up therapeutic massages and facials, refreshing and rejuvenating muscles and skin.
For years, Denise Grigorakos kept other people's salons and spas running. In 2012, she drew on that experience and expertise and opened a business of her own: Tre Salon and Spa. She realized her vision of a beautiful, tranquil facility where customers could relax and revive as stylists and aestheticians provided expert beauty services. In the salon, stylists cut, color, and coif hair and apply the latest straightening and hydrating products to strengthen tresses. Soothing signature facials and skin-smoothing peels beautify skin and help clowns clear away grease paint after a 5-year-old's birthday party. Aestheticians can also remove unwanted hair with quick waxing services or apply both conventional and airbrush makeup to faces.
Warm tea, a massaging shampoo chair, and iPads loaded with digital versions of more than 120 magazines. These luxurious amenities are part of what sets Le Boudoir apart from other salons. But they aren't even the main reason to schedule a visit?just ask the clients who keep coming back for blowouts and makeup courtesy of the wizard-like Mamoune Tazi and his team of stylists.
Born in Morocco, Tazi spent years studying women's beauty treatments in France before opening his own studio on the other side of the Atlantic. Today, he continues to draw on his European training to infuse hair with silky, voluminous texture and amplify natural beauty with cosmetics. He designs each treatment to make clients feel gorgeous and confident, but the benefits don't end there; Tazi also donates a portion of his profits to local charities.
"Individuality is crucial," says Richard Calcasola, the founder and mastermind behind Maximus Spa Salon. He's referring to the importance of understanding a client's lifestyle and habits before providing a haircut, ensuring that each resulting look is both unique and maintainable. Listening is a skill Calcasola has stressed to his team for more than 40 years, and it has earned him a reputation for being friendly and approachable even as he helps set international styling trends.
At Maximus, Calcasola oversees a staff of beauty professionals who draw on his lessons to cut and color hair. They also perform a number of other spa-related services, treating guests to waxing treatments, manicures, and skin-firming facials. When he's not consulting with celebrities and trimming the tresses of publications such as Vogue and the New York Times, Calcasola can often be spotted making the rounds at the salon himself.
