65-year-old Judith Harris hadn't worked out a day in her life. In her testimonial on CardioBody Fitness & Lifestyle's website, she says, "It was with absolute fear that I entered a gym for the first time, knowing I needed help, but not having any idea what to expect." Jessyca Slaymaker, the center's owner and head trainer, worked with her to devise a personalized fitness regimen, then helped her build the confidence to push herself past her preconceived fitness barriers. Today, Judith is down to 5% body fat and can curl a 15-pound dumbbell. "What I am learning from [Jessyca] has impacted my life beyond the gym," she says. "I give her the highest recommendation."

This is just one of the success stories from CardioBody Fitness & Lifestyle, where experienced teachers and trainers forge fit bodies in the seasoned and inexperienced alike. For parents with small children, Jessyca and her certified staff host Mommy & Me yoga sessions and the Tiny Jammers music class, which keeps little ones engaged with creative music activities while parents work out. Jessyca calls on her prenatal fitness certification to lead Baby Bump Bootcamp, which keeps expectant mothers healthy and helps stave off the common aches and pains of pregnancy. Naturally, CardioBody Fitness & Lifestyle also offers a host of classic fitness classes, leading students through everything from restorative yoga to medicine ball workouts. Morning Mix Flow vinyasa yoga classes help detox the body with vigorous poses and breath work as ballet barre sessions harness the lengthening and strengthening powers of traditional ballet techniques.

The rivalry between Ducks fans and Beavers fans is built right into the Ducks vs. Beavers Rivalry Clash's race course. Supporters of the two teams, decked out in their most spirited gear, kick off the chip-timed race at separate starting lines, and begin the race by running straight towards each like old armies. Instead of a head-on collision, the two groups funnel into a single mass, sharing a race course as they vie for the fastest times on the 5K or 10K route. The speediest school wins a donation to their university's laptop scholarship program, plus the right to refer to their rival school as "our satellite campus."

Regardless of the results, everyone buries the hatchet at a tailgate-style afterparty, where entertainment ranges from a tug-of-war to the most beloved of collegiate pastimes: a flip-cup tournament. The flip-cup games, as well as corn-hole and other competitive events, give racers a chance to earn more glory for their schools. There are also awards for the fastest individuals, the team of five with the lowest combined time, and the school with the lowest overall score (as determined by the sum of the top 100 runners' places).

Quench the Fire Run was started to raise money for the USC Pain Center, which strives to treat patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD/CRPS) and other chronic pain diseases with the best patient care possible?while also educating patients, medical professionals, and the community about these debilitating ailments and researching their causes. Now in its 8th year, the event lets racers run or walk a 5K or 10K course that finishes in Lake Balboa Park to raise awareness of RSD.

Generally, adulthood forces people to give up childish pleasure, robbing them of the joy associated with playing in puddles, unearthing hidden treasure, and being silly in public. Sierra Adventure Sports wants grownups to regress, if only for a day. In service of that goal, the company organizes a variety of novel races that range from city scavenger hunts for the casual adventurer to creative triathlon courses for the ambitious athlete.

Scavenger Blitz, for instance, turns exploring one's city into a fun, fast-paced race scattered with clues, obstacle courses, and riddles. Racers in teams of at least two scour the urban jungle in search of 12 clues, which can include challenges, riddles, or orders that need be completed before crossing the finish line. Some send racers hunting for a snapshot in front of a landmark, whereas others challenge them to complete some special feat, such as conquering an obstacle course on stilts. The Mad Mud Run challenges participants to sprint and frolic through a dirty and deliciously fun outdoor obstacle course littered with manmade obstructions such as cargo nets, hills of hay bales, monkey bars, and slimy mud pits. Extreme Heat Adventure Races combine equal parts triathlon and scavenger hunt to create a 10?12K journey filled with running, river rafting, and mystery challenges that could pit teams against anything from blindfolded puzzles to wall climbs. Most Sierra Adventure Sports events encourage racers to compete in costumes of all types save for gremlins, which multiply in water and unfairly dominate the timed results.
