Rick Martinez began his career as a registered nurse, working in emergency rooms across the country to help patients overcome intense physical traumas. However, it was during an 18-month tour of service at Walter Reed Army Medical Center that Rick encountered the mother of a wounded soldier who changed his aspirations in life. Her indomitable spirit and the bravery with which she supported her son through his pain and recovery inspired Rick. Fully intent on helping people develop the unflinching resolve needed to better their own lives and well-being, he founded Fitness Porvida—Fitness for Life.
The center’s health gurus lead CrossFit and fitness sessions for students of virtually any fitness level, using functional exercises to create challenging, full-body workouts that build the strength and endurance necessary for students to bench-press their bathtubs. Yet physical exercise isn’t the only tool that the trainers employ—they also use nutritional guidance and camaraderie to empower their clients. Rick summarized this approach to the San Antonio Business Journal in 2010, saying, “when we treat the body as a whole the results are fantastic.”
Thanks to mAn-i-fOld Fitness, each participant can finally experience a fun and effective fitness environment while shedding his or her boring fitness routine of crank-starting the Model T each morning. MAn-i-fOld’s experienced instructor duo of Manny Davila and Marci Klemcke assists fitness-seeking individuals in toning their cores and strengthening arms into jar-lid-strangling openers. By constantly switching up exercise routines and rotating locations, mAn-i-fOld focuses on keeping workouts interesting and participants motivated, laying a foundation for continued fitness gains. Fit-camp programs offer a custom training routine that caters to each individual, and a versatile schedule presents plenty of workout opportunities while leaving enough time for smelting barbells out of old bathtubs.
i9 Sports North and North Central San Antonio provides organized youth leagues lasting six–eight weeks. Unlike other leagues, i9 Sports meets once a week, opening up practice facilities one hour prior to games so kids can practice fundamentals and performance-enhancing hugs immediately before the game. That way, budding sportsmen can implement what they've learned right away and parents don't have to rent a limo to chauffer kids back and forth every day. In a nurturing setting that forbids taunts and angry shouts from both kids and parents, young batters and goalies will each get equal playing time alongside healthy competition. Coaches teach a new value each week, and whichever child displays the most accurate interpretive dance to best mimic it during the game gets a sportsmanship medal. A weekly newsletter keeps parents abreast of the week-to-week lessons and progress.
At Elite Pilates Reformer Studio, owner and instructor Luisa Parker leans on a career of more than 29 years as a dance instructor, a certified personal trainer, and a red/black belt in karate to lead high-energy Pilates Reformer sessions. Working with Luisa, you’ll build strength without bulking up, improve posture, balance, and flexibility, and excel in sports and exercise.
The experienced instructors at Amy’s All Star Dance Studio do more than just share the secrets of their rug-cutting skills; they also deliver a healthy jolt of confidence to the dancers with whom they work. The change in attitude—along with newfound fitness—comes about naturally when students of all ages and levels master the graceful flourishes of ballet and acrobatics or quick clacks of tap at weekly dance classes. The studio also houses guitar, piano, violin, and voice lessons, training the next generation of accompanists for dance recitals or Bollywood-themed bank robberies.
Heart-pumping music drives workouts at NBgroupx, and owner Khristina Wrase—armed with a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science—calls upon dance-based Zumba moves and a trio of Les Mills workouts to whip clients into shape. The 55-minute BodyFlow class begins with soothing tai chi moves before a series of Pilates and yoga stretches limbers up limbs, concluding with 10 minutes of relaxation and meditation. BodyPump engages muscles head-to-toe with free-weight strength-training moves, and BodyCombat mimics karate, boxing, and tae kwon do. The choreography and music of all three classes change every three months to keep muscles from pulling themselves out of boredom. Staffers also motivate movers and shakers through boot camps and Latin-inspired Zumba dance, which, unlike swallowing a space heater, both torch calories and tones physiques.
