Founded by cellist Kenneth Freudigman and violist Emily Watkins Freudigman in 2004, Camerata San Antonio brings together a symphonic roster composed of several of the San Antonio Symphony's principal players and more than a few internationally recognized musicians. More than a dozen acclaimed artists might be on-call for a concert during any given season, and the entourage's diverse concert schedule consequently offers plenty of strikingly different small-ensemble performances.
ComedySportz’s troupe of all-star laughletes is considered to be not only comedic, but also to have good sportsmanship, since there’s no swearing allowed, the subject matter is suited for all ages, and the show is monitored by a referee who calls offense fouls and hides unfunny heads in a shameful brown bag. Take a friend, relative, significant other, or the relative of a friend’s significant other to see two teams of expert improvisers fight for laughs through an average of 7– 12 scenes, games, and songs based on audience suggestions. At the end, the crowd votes to decide which team wins the honor of dumping life-size cardboard cutouts of the other team into an active volcano.
Each of San Antonio Music Academy's professionally trained instructors have the formal education and musical know-how to melodiously mold the minds of their students during one-on-one music lessons. Dulcet disciples can clean out their pipes with voice lessons, get plucky with the guitar, or make the saloon swoon by studying piano. Lessons on orchestra are also included for those that want to sharpen their chops on the violin. Students must supply their own instruments during instruction, but everyone can choose the type of style they want to master, giving students free reign to get schooled in jazz, blues, rock, country, or Gregorian polka chanting. Each lesson at San Antonio Music Academy lasts 30-minutes, and three recitals are held every year to showcase the students' talent.
Candela Estudio specializes in dances that invigorate. The schedule sends students through a whirlwind of morning Dance Jams—Latin- and pop-music-driven sessions—belly-dancing classes, and Zumba workouts held four days a week. Specially designed Fogoxe classes immerse dancers in a party atmosphere with energetic beats from musicians from around the world. Youth dance classes teach basic jazz and hip-hop techniques such as interpretive movement and breaking. Candela Estudio can also choreograph dances for special events and hone dancers’ abilities to distinguish between left and right in private ballroom lessons.
Laugh Out Loud hosts well-established laugh conjurers and undiscovered comedic masterminds capable of leaving the audience doubled over in harmonized chuckles. Past Laugh Out Loud audience-slayers have graced the stages of HBO, Showtime, and Comedy Central, and upcoming performers include musical comedian Ron Feingold, who produces a cappella backup, lead, and percussive vocals with his three separate mouths (July 28–30). Lyndel Pleasant, a former stagemate of Chris Rock, weaves anecdotes of marriage and fatherhood into his act (August 4–6), and Ward Anderson, author of The Ultimate Bachelor’s Guide, tackles audiences with his physical comedy (August 11–13). All shows last approximately two hours and showcase three comedians or one mythical hydra that wants to know what the deal is with airplane peanuts.
