Vincent Eufemia has always loved animals, but his busy schedule as a computer consultant once kept him from giving proper attention to his furry best friend, a labrador named Cassady. After trying out several different daycares, he realized that at many of them, the dogs were not permitted outside to play. This absence of canine fun spurred him to leave consulting behind and open Emerald Street Kennels, a pet daycare and boarding facility anchored by an enormous indoor and outdoor play area. Four different rooms categorize dogs according to size, age, and temperament. When they're not frolicking in one of these spaces or the fluffy grass, up to nine overnight pooches can each lounge in their very own 4"x6" doggie apartment. Each one comes fully furnished with rubber matting, a trampoline bed, and a chaise lounge upholstered in bacon.
Feline guests reside in the Cattery, a block of padded cat condos with a variety of toys and a separate ventilation system to prevent airborne diseases. Owners can check in on their pets via Emerald Street's website, whose camera feed displays each animal sleeping soundly and chasing dream cars to the sounds of classical music.
Little Feather Ranch is owner and manager Teri Hallman’s equine oasis amid the verdant expanse of Eagle, Idaho. There, horses trot outdoors in cool summer breezes and prance around the insulated indoor arena all through the year. A nearby 5-mile trail allows visitors to explore Eagle Island State Park on guided horseback rides.
Accredited by the Certified Horsemanship Association, Teri imparts riding skills in both Western and English styles. English riding entails a lighter saddle and more direct control over the horse’s reins, whereas the Western style requires a larger saddle, lax one-handed rein control, and an encyclopedic knowledge of John Wayne quotes. Little Feather’s boarding service treats horses to attentive care and a supply of grass and alfalfa hay grown onsite. While at the ranch, riders can peruse a line of exclusive handmade leather bags, Western shirts, and hat bands.
