When Sean and Ginger Glaccum look wilderness in the eye, wilderness always blinks first. Sean, a licensed river guide for more than 14 years, and Ginger, an accomplished tour leader and photographer, have conquered rivers throughout the United States, Africa, Nepal, and India. Sean boasts certifications as a wilderness first responder and outdoor emergency medical-care provider, and Ginger has survived the croc-infested waters of the Zambezi river. Together, they lead adventurers through Idaho waterways on Payette River Company's half-, full-, and multiday whitewater rafting trips. They help visitors navigate four designated sections of the south fork of the Payette River, taking them plunging through Class II, III, and IV rapids, traversing rocky outcrops, and paddling through picturesque local scenery. On some trips, they also make stops at local swimming holes and the Kirkham Hot Springs.
Dead-On Archery is a 8,000-square-foot archer?s sanctuary that helps bring the feel of the outdoors indoors with mounted animal-head trophies and lifelike animal targets. The indoor grounds feature a fully equipped 20- and 30-yard range with a hunting simulator dart system. On any given day, National Field Archery Association master instructors teach budding Robin Hoods key shooting techniques with traditional and compound bows. The copious space also hosts seasoned archers during range practice as they aim for paper targets and three-dimensional targets, such as deer. Archery tournaments, target practice, and 3-D archery are all commonplace throughout the week and weekends. Those looking to bolster their equipment arsenals can visit the pro shop brand name items. The onsite shop repairs broken crossbows and outfits customers with such equipment as bowstring wax, feathers, and full-body steel-plate armor.
Bear Valley River Co. fuels outdoor fun with half- or full-day whitewater-rafting excursions along the Payette River. Licensed guides help passengers navigate the river’s twists and turns from a well-maintained fleet of inflatable rafts. The current-savvy hosts provide life jackets, helmets, and a laminated copy of A River Runs Through It for each rider, and can also offer catered meals prepared in the company's on-site restaurant. Guides place a strong emphasis on safety with mandatory equipment checks and a safety orientation before each excursion. Following the whitewater orientation, groups can enjoy a relaxing jaunt down the main Payette River, course through the waterfalls and Class IV rapids of the South Fork, or spend the day fishing in Swirly Canyon.
A competitive shooter since he was a teenager, Mike Wirth began teaching responsible firearms operations during college. Between bouts of studying for his degree in mechanical engineering, he showed friends and classmates the firearms basics, such as marksmanship fundamentals, proper cleaning and storage, and how to smelt each bullet by hand.
Now teamed with business partner Aaron Goodfellow, Wirth continues training clients in responsible armed defense. On the outdoor ranges shared with Parma Rod and Gun Club, he and Goodfellow lead classes focused on handgun operations, teaching guests skills from swapping magazines to courteous behaviors when on the range.
