CASA matches volunteers with children who have been removed to foster care, and the volunteers spend time with children to ensure their physical, emotional, and educational needs are satisfied, as well as testify on behalf of the children in court. CASA volunteers are also available to answer children’s questions and give advice, providing consistent presence during often-unstable times in children’s lives. Specialized training teaches volunteers to understand court-related matters including case investigation, interacting with Child Protective Services and the attorney ad litem, testifying in court, attending hearings and locating the necessary social services. CASA needs additional funding to cover the costs of recruiting and training new court-appointed advocates. With $400, CASA can purchase publications and recruitment materials, training materials, and supplies, and fund training facilitation.
Originally a 9-hole course upon its opening in 1978, community-owned The Bridges at Claresholm expanded into an 18-hole course in 2005 after designer Les Furber spent four years expertly crafting a back nine. Four tee boxes and attachable Gadget arms precede each hole, allowing patrons to adjust their distance to the green and driving angle to better avoid obstacles such as 12 water hazards. The Bridges at Claresholm also employs golf expert Lyle Broderson to offer private, semiprivate, or group lessons to golfers looking to make improvements, and hosts tournaments and male, female, and gopher leagues. Additionally, an on-site pro shop supplies participants with essential gear such as balls, clubs, and golf-suitable clothing, and Putter's Restaurant & Catering in the facility's clubhouse satiates visitors with weekly specials such as the Friday-night all-you-can-eat fish fry.
At Rocking Lazy K Ranch, scrub grasses and evergreens bristle across 1,800 acres. Within this rustic backdrop, ranch owner Scott leads trail rides and teaches horseback-riding lessons. "I love teaching beginners about horses and watching them as they progress," he says. During lessons, students learn essential skills of horsemanship, from how to dress and mount a horse to how to gallop and parallel park.
On paths that wind along ancient roads and muddy creeks, Scott guides students and visitors on outings to the ranch's scenic corners. Whether on wooded or open land, Scott notes, there's "a good chance of seeing local wildlife." Afterward, Scott swaps his riding gear for a kitchen get-up and steps behind the grill to sear 6-ounce steaks. A hearty meal soon follows, incorporating Texas-style sides and freshly prepared pie.
