Located about 22 miles north of Charlotte, Davidson College offers 21 Division I intercollegiate sports, including the domesticated southern conference Davidson Wildcats. The team is looking to defend home-court domination after last year’s regular-season series loss to conference rival Appalachian State. Returning senior and round-ball renaissance man Brendan McKillop will try to leap closer to 1,000 career points as he hammers the hardwood in a battle with the North Division–favorite Mountaineers and team high scorer Donald Sims. Coach Bob McKillop, the school and SoCon’s all-time winningest Donkey Kong champion and basketball coach, is closing in on a milestone of his own with his 400th career victory rolling around the rim.

Outdoor Family Fun Center nurtures the various swing-based abilities of its patrons with multiple driving, putting, and batting facilities. Customers can exchange batting-cage tokens ($1.75/each) for 15 pitches from an arm-style machine. The batting cages launch line-drive ammo at various speeds that range from slow-pitch softballs to 80-mph baseballs. Throughout the year golfers can calibrate their crosshairs with buckets of balls ($6+) on the driving range's covered and heated hitting stations or the artificial mats and grass tees. The 3-acre Bermuda grass short-game area ($8 for all-day play) includes target greens and uphill lies while enabling golfers to practice picking the locks on sand traps. The 18-hole, par 42 miniature golf course ($5 for kids younger than 12, $6 for adults) challenges putters with slopes, turns, and professionally landscaped ponds and waterfalls.

Though Charlotte Checkers history dates back nearly a half-century, today's Checkers made their AHL debut just recently in 2010. As the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes, the team breeds young talent capable of performing in a professional environment while withstanding gale-force winds. Fans at Time Warner Cable Arena lend their support by drawing up backwards plays on the fogged-up glass, and mascot Chubby entertains the crowd by dancing and riding four-wheelers on the ice at intermission.

The Charlotte Eagles are a professional men's soccer team who compete in the second division of the United Soccer Leagues. This year's roster is packed with serious soccer muffins, such as midfielder and fruit elitist Joe DeLass and Uruguayan forward Gustavo Bentos. The players will only be able to display fancy footwork for four more home games. Check out the schedule and plan to attend a game when the sun will be close enough to earth to tan your body home-team orange.

Marion Lake Club's parcel of fertile land borders the mighty Lake James to the north and Pisgah National Forest to the east, forming a scenic cradle for the 18-hole golf course. In fact, part of the course fills a peninsula jutting out into the lake itself, creating the potential for a water-logged round if golfers spray their golf shots off the tee or find themselves at the helm a feral golf cart. Meanwhile, Linville Gorge and Shortoff Mountain hover on the horizon, giving players better aiming points as they corral their golf balls over the Bermuda fairways and bent grass greens that line the rolling terrain.

Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 70 course * Total length of 6,174 yards from the back tees * Course rating of 70.4 from the back tees * Course slope of 126 from the back tees * Five sets of tees per hole * View the scorecard
