Over the last century and change, the organization's mission changed to keep pace with the evolving times; today, the YMCA of Greater Boston welcomes anyone interested in furthering the causes of "youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility."
This modern mission combines the Y's signature programming with new initiatives designed to keep citizens one step ahead of an ever-changing world. Members stay fit and active with everything from organized sports and fitness classes to lifeguard, CPR, and first aid lessons. But the Y's developmental programs go far beyond bodily strength; their enrichment and leadership courses equip youths with the confidence needed to take charge in their everyday lives, and ESL classes help newcomers to English embark on the next step of their linguistic lives.
A quick study in graceful movement, Peter Gelzhinsky competed in the finals at the USA National Dance Championship just three years after taking up the craft. Parlaying his quick learning into effective teaching methods, Peter now leads hot-footed hopefuls through lessons that cover such social ballroom dances as merengue, cha-cha, and the hustle. Students can also breakdance to the thumping beats of hip-hop classes, or sashay with a provided partner through the salsa-like steps of the bachata. Many students enlist in Star Dance School’s lessons in preparation for a wedding or the grand opening of a laundromat with a dance floor.
Since its inception as a nonprofit organization in 1985, Community Rowing Inc. has guided more than 15,000 students in invigorating rowing sessions held on the Charles River. Their experienced staff of Olympians and coaches helps students to become familiar with industry-standard boats and rowing machines through comprehensive introductory lessons and extended handshakes with the rowing arms. After gleaning the skills necessary to properly use equipment, students gain access to locker rooms, training areas, and any additional courses on the Charles River. The full-body, calorie-burning workouts are available throughout the week, allowing students to learn essential techniques such as sweeping, sculling, and dealing peacefully with the water road rage of aggressive gondoliers.
Boston's Choice for Physical Therapy. Boston Sports Medicine is a privately owned physical therapy practice specializing in sports rehabilitation, orthopedic rehabilitation, post-surgical rehabilitation, and aquatic therapy with clinics in Allston, Boston, Somerville, and Watertown.
Cofounders Jill Tomich and Peter Lavelle had both been active in the fitness world before they opened Ultimate Bootcamp in 2004. Jill threw her energies into boxing, ballet, yoga, and blogging for a wedding diet-and-fitness website, and Peter, a native Irishman, was a triathlete. In all his pursuits, Peter adhered to the motto "We're not here for a long time?we're here for a good time."
This credo infuses all of the boot-camp programs. Campers from all across the fitness spectrum find accommodation as the workouts meet them close to home. Trainers never push too far, but always challenge. Mount Auburn Club strives to be a one-stop shop for fitness, wellness, and recreation. Members can sweat as they cheer on their favorite infomercials in the cardio theater, plunge into the salt-filtrated lap pool, or practice their tennis strokes out on 11 indoor and outdoor courts, which were featured on the Tennis Channel. Professional fitness instructors pump upbeat music for more than 90 group fitness classes each week, from Les Mills classes such as BodyPump to group cycling and Zumba. The mind/body classes include five styles of yoga, tai chi, and ballet barre. Joint-friendly aquatics classes take place in the four-lane, 75-foot-long lap pool overlooking the gardens and deck. Swimmers can recover in the whirlpool after practicing their synchronized doggy paddling.
The club's personal trainers help members map out fitness plans centered on achieving their personal goals.
