The Monkey Gym's founders—Kerry Cutler, a former YMCA gymnastics instructor, and Tony Cooper, a wrestling coach and teacher—opened their nonprofit, 6,500-square-foot rumpus room to provide healthy playing opportunities for children regardless of economic or ergonomic barriers. At twice-weekly open-gym sessions, kids can tumble, bounce, sprint, and gambol under the watchful eye of coaches trained in the arts of gymnastics, wrestling, and cheerleading. Junior gymnasts can imitate the facility's namesake simian by swinging from rings or by hurling themselves into the Monkey Pit, a playpen filled with hundreds of yellow foam cubes. Artistically inclined youngsters, meanwhile, can add to their oeuvre in the on-site studio, the walls of which are bedecked with student-made art and encrusted with Swarovski crystals that possess no magical powers.

Through the Kids to Kids literacy program, Spread the Word Nevada works with book distributors to purchase gently used and new books and distributes them to children in 24 Clark County elementary schools. In the last decade, Kids to Kids has donated more than one million books to these schools. Participating schools have noted an increase in the number of students who meet or exceed reading standards, which can lead to greater academic and economic success for these children.

With the mantra of "leveling the playing field," The Ogden Foundation works directly with schools and area nonprofit organizations to provide academic and athletic programs for students from low-income households. Its literacy and afterschool enrichment program, known as CAAMP Ogden Club, provides classes with books to dissect through daily readings and a book report. Once a week, participating students also take part in afterschool activities such as book discussions, antibullying workshops, and boxing classes.

At the end of CAAMP Ogden Club’s weekly programs, students receive a healthy snack and drink, which program manager Stacy Smith hopes will encourage them to make better, healthier choices when they’re at home. And the students and teachers who participate in CAAMP Ogden seem to love it. As fifth-grade student Bianca G. said, "I love CAAMP Ogden. … I like how we go inside and talk about the book, eat a snack, and relax after all that exercise. I simply cannot wait to go to CAAMP Ogden."

"Seeing what we are doing is making a difference," Smith said. "It’s my hope to help set a student on a path to reach for more in life, to learn as much as they possibly can while having fun doing so, and to become an all-around healthy, happy, productive member of society."

Although today Black Rock Solar empowers nonprofits, schools, and underserved populations by providing low-cost energy, its beginnings were less defined. In the sweltering Black Rock Desert of northern Nevada a volunteer group installed a solar array for the 2007 Burning Man event—themed that year as the Green Man. Their giant array provided more than 50,000 people with energy while they partied, but afterward, when the ash of the burning figure settled, the solar panels remained. The group donated the array to the school system of Gerlach, the tiny desert town nearby, and the seeds of Black Rock Solar were sown.

From those beginnings, Black Rock went on to build solar arrays at reduced prices for partners such as Pershing General Hospital, Pyramid Lake High School, the Fallon Paiute Shoshone Tribe, and other organizations that could benefit from low-cost energy but lacked the means to procure it. The arrays help reduce the organizations' utility bills so they can devote more resources to their central causes. Also by spreading solar power, Black Rock actively involves these organizations and the public at large in environmental stewardship, spreading clean energy and education.

The Salvation Army Family Store collects and resells donated items ranging from vintage clothing to antique furniture. Patrons can search for wardrobes, tables, and couches to fill out their home, plates and silverware to stock their empty kitchen, and VCRs to feed their pet robot. All proceeds from the Family Stores support The Salvation Army's Adult Rehabilitation Centers. Located across the country, these centers provide faith-based residential and transitional rehabilitation programs for men and women dealing with alcohol and substance abuse.?

Though the best way to contribute to the organization's mission is with monetary donations, the Salvation Army accepts donations of used goods and clothing to sell in the network of Family Stores. All sales of these donated items support the funding of the organization's programming. People can donate goods at convenient drop-off locations or schedule a free truck pickup of the donated items.

By nature of their profession, doctors and nurses have unpredictable schedules. It's tough to squeeze in a certification or recertification class between patients, research, and charming their stethoscope with a pungi's hypnotic tones. National Health Care Provider Solutions has found a workaround, however, in the form of online courses that are all designed by board-certified physicians to abide by AHA standards.

Each course is accessible any time, from any device with Internet access. Video tutorials and study guides familiarize students with their chosen subject, whether it's basic life support, advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, or CPR, AED, and First Aid. After passing the exam at the end of the course, students receive a digital certificate and an internationally accepted certification card in the mail.
