The instructors at Take it Out! aren't exactly anti-gym, but they are anti-ceiling. They prefer to sweat beneath the sky alongside their students, who follow them through boot-camp drills, running routes, and strength-building exercises in Boulder Central Park. Their classes combine the galvanizing energy of group workouts with the sense of liberation that comes from exploring nature—a counterpoint to the constricted, crowded feeling of indoor fitness venues and home gyms inside your broom closet. Even their personal-training sessions can be scheduled outside.

Their curriculum covers sports- and triathlon-focused training in addition to more generalized routines. Each lesson takes a balanced approach to conditioning with movements that improve core power, agility, and endurance. And, if the weather is bad or too cold, classes move to shelter at Body Dynamics.

With its crisp blue-and-white color scheme, glossy wood floors, and menagerie of geometric equipment—including stability balls stacked on the walls—The Pilates Doctor Studio almost looks like a gallery for avant-garde artwork. Founders Jay Hart and Ethan Blumenhein aimed for this slick, urban atmosphere when they began their business, which they envisioned as a one-stop venue for Pilates and fitness enthusiasts. Professional instructors utilize mats, reformers, chairs, and towers to help students tighten their core muscles during private and group classes for all experience levels. Morning and lunchtime classes are available, and lessons are personalized to target specific goals, such as injury rehabilitation or gaining enough strength to carry the dead horse out of your third-floor apartment.

During construction of all its new studios, CPY strives to use recycled content, install eco-friendly and efficient mechanical systems, and ensure that any waste created doesn't end up in landfills or just piled in Mr. Henderson's garage.

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?

Incorporating both weights and resistance, riding at Beat Cycle provides a full-body workout that challenges riders through both cardiovascular and strength training. The magic of Beat cycling is that you can target everything all at once. It is truly unlike anything else in Boulder. Come ride!

Exercise is challenging. How do you keep clients motivated and engaged?

Our instructor/DJs are not only highly trained, incredibly fit, energetic, and at the top of their game, they also have been trained in music?a Beat Cycle class is like going to the best party you've ever been to with your favorite music and your best friends in the coolest club you've ever seen.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?

Our founders love fitness and love music and when they moved to Boulder two years ago, they realized that the incredible fun that indoor cycling can offer was missing here. They decided to create a place for this obsession-inducing, heart-pumping, rhythm-inspired cycling in their new hometown.

What do you love most about your job? Riding with incredible people who realize they are stronger, fitter, and happier than they even thought, while jamming out to amazing music on a state-of-the-art sound system, in a tricked-out studio with cutting-edge bikes...basically what's not to love? Beat Cycle is the most fun thing. Ever.

On weekends, the 10 bowling lanes at The Connection in the UMC at UC Boulder glow under neon club lights so that guests can practice their dance moves as well as their curve balls. The lanes are also open throughout the week, ready to entertain students, townsfolk, and thrill-seeking armadillos who wander into the entertainment hub tucked into the University of Colorado Boulder's University Memorial Center. The center's eight regulation pool tables won the runner-up title for Best Pool on Colorado Daily’s CU & Boulder's Best 2011 list, and it also hosts pinball, foosball, and air hockey tables, a full wall of arcade machines, and games for Wii and other systems.
