Dog City, a daycare and boarding facility, is managed as a "right livelihood" business, meaning that as much as possible, the staff strives to give back to the community in all of its efforts. Marketing and promotion are funneled primarily through nonprofit organizations, and boarding and daycare are always available pro bono for ill or homeless owners. As pups cavort around the 6,000-square-foot indoor space, they might play fetch with a member of Chinook Clubhouse, which partnered with Dog City to provide employment options for those with special needs, benefitting both them and the dogs. Two outdoor yards mean big dogs can play without fear of smaller dogs trying to hitch a ride on their ears, and overnight guests bunk down in their own private areas.

One dark and stormy night, Dr. Lee Woods, DVM received an unexpected visitor. Spooked by the clamor and rain, a doggie-daycare regular had burst through her owner?s storm door and run to the other place where she felt safe: Broadway Animal Hospital.

Dr. Woods, whose work on behalf of homeless animals earned him a humanitarian award from the Humane Society, established the hospital in 1991. The recently remodeled facility soon earned accreditation from the American Animal Hospital Association?a distinction held by only 14 percent of animal hospitals. Here, Dr. Woods works alongside several animal specialists, including a certified canine massage therapist, a groomer, and a professional bacon chef. Services range from immunizations and boarding to surgery, emergency care, and house calls. From 2010?2013, the Daily Camera recognized Dr. Woods's hospital with a gold award for best veterinarian.

Raised on a New Mexico ranch, Jordan Di Marco has been an animal person her whole life. After starting Dogma Catma Pet Sitting as a side job while in college, she soon realized it was her calling. Understanding that pets are most comfortable at home, Jordan and her staff provide services that include pet visits while owners are away. During that time, they feed, medicate, and walk the animals. The staff also offers 12-hour overnight stays as well as grooming services and fish-tank maintenance.

It's hard to make room for nearly 8,000 wagging tails, 16,000 wandering eyes, and 32,000 batting paws, but Foothills Animal Shelter always finds a way. Due to its open-admissions policy—which means that no animal is turned away—the shelter welcomes roughly 8,000 homeless animals per year, treating them to housing and the attention of its professionals and volunteers. Once inside, the animals are given sanctuary, shots, and the chance to steal the hearts of potential adopters with their puppy-dog eyes.

But the caretakers at Foothills Animal Shelter don't just wait for needy pets to find them. They also perform such preventive measures as neutering, spaying, licensing, and vaccinations in order to ensure that pets with homes remain healthy and out of harm's way. This motive also drives the shelter's microchip services, which provide electronic identification should pets become lost, and training that teaches animals to follow commands and avoid white outfits after Labor Day.
