Spanning 25,000 square feet of living quarters for coldblooded creatures, Reptilia houses more than 200 venomous and nonvenomous reptiles and amphibians. Experienced keepers and handlers educate zoo-goers on the critters that make up the more than 50 exhibits, including star attractions such as a 14-foot king cobra, a red-footed tortoise, and Induna—a 14-foot Nile crocodile weighing more than 1,200 pounds. Besides expounding on animals’ eating habits during four live feedings each day, the staff also demonstrates the reptiles’ instinctive behaviors during live shows in an on-site theatre. Furthering its commitment to reptilian education, the zoo helps visitors overcome their irrational fears of snakes, spiders, and terrarium glass in a four-week course dedicated to phobias, and camp counselors guide Reptilia campers through science experiments, arts and crafts, and ecologically focused zoo tours.
Birds chirp and leaves rustle as pups trot down the nature trail. Water splashes as dogs bound through the agility course at the in-ground swimming hole known as Canine Cove. Country Paws Boarding's rural retreat sprawls over 6,000 square feet, where daycare charges burn pent-up energy in several quarter-acre play yards, keeping them from using their owners' shoes for origami projects when they get home. Overnight guests enjoy private suites with covered patios, and grooming sessions can be scheduled to keep dogs looking clean and fresh.
After years of frustration dealing with her pets’ health ailments, certified pet-food consultant Chris Schaeffer discovered the benefits of holistic, natural animal care. Inspired by her experiences, she went on to establish Creature Comfort in 2003, helping owners nurture their pets with natural, herbal, and homeopathic dog and cat foods and holistic health products.
In addition to meticulously researching each product that lines the long aisles of her spacious, colourful store, Chris and her experienced staff assist customers with product choices, and also offer services such as free nutritional consultations and nail trimming. Committed to supporting pets in need, Creature Comfort holds regular fundraising events to support animal-rescue organizations, and Chris is often willing to give a job to any animal that asks politely.
