From the passionate fury of flamenco to tango’s forbidden heat, the polished elegance of classical ballet to the earthen power of modern dance, the Latin Ballet of Virginia uses the expressive beauty of movement to weave the tales and traditions that are the heart and soul of Hispanic culture.
Led by Heather Dombrovskiy, the certified yoga instructors of Healthy Life Yoga guide students of all fitness levels through a variety of classes. Starting with sunrise yoga, the instructors pack the schedule with their flexibility-increasing classes that include yin yoga, a slow class that moves into deeper stretches in the lower backs and hips, prenatal yoga, and traditional Hatha yoga classes that start with foundation-building beginner classes and move to more advanced, fast-paced classes.
With morning and evening classes scheduled seven days a week, Solid Ground offers mind-and-body foundational lifts for yogis of all ages and bodily rigidities in a peaceful residential studio far from the bustle of a noisy gym. Owner Wanda Castelvecchi and her studio's five certified instructors design their stretch sessions to span the entire spine-bending, sigh-inducing spectrum. The beginning Hatha class emphasizes proper pose alignment and breathing, with plenty of verbal and hands-on correction. Bendier bodies, meanwhile, can work their way up through various intensities of Vinyasa flow to the intense power yoga, in which they can master such physically challenging asanas as the Downward Facing God and the Hulk Smash. Solid Ground also hosts a number of specialized classes, such as Yin yoga—which focuses on long holds that stretch the connective tissues in the hips, pelvis, and lower spine—or the graceful, fluid lunar yoga, a woman- and wolfman-centric course that causes less wear-and-tear on the wrists and shoulders. The mirror-free studio surrounds students with natural lighting, allowing participants to boost their flexibility and strength far from the boorish catcalls of Supreme Court justices.
