Anthony Trucks wasn't born into affluence. As a young child, he shuffled from foster home to foster home. But he found strength in his faith, and decided to channel his pain into something positive: athletics. That's how he ended up in the NFL, where he learned the ins and outs of training with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Pittsburgh Steelers until a shoulder injury left him permanently sidelined. At Trucks Training, he and his staff convert the high-intensity training of professional athletes into fitness classes and sports training for the everyman.
Anthony Malta and Tyler Wilcox—the co-owners and coaches at CrossFit ASAP—both have CrossFit Level 1 certifications and strength-and-conditioning experience that dates back to high school. At CrossFit ASAP, they use friendly motivation and CrossFit’s dogma of varied, functional fitness to help clients get in shape. Workouts of the Day (WODs) often incorporate exercises such as weightlifting, interval training, body-weight exercises, and less conventional methods such as sled pushing and kettlebell training.
In an open space of hardwood floors and walls of mirrors, members work up a sweat on treadmills and elliptical trainers while focusing their attention on the personal TVs each machine is equipped with. This is one of the many perks at FitU's Modesto, Oakdale, and Riverbank locations, some of which also feature massage therapy that can soothe muscles after working out or running into the weight room’s clear plexiglass walls. The enthusiastic staff is always on hand to dole out pointers to those heaving free weights or pushing toward David-like physiques on the circuit weight-training machines. They also motivate patrons in a social setting with group fitness classes, including yoga, Pilates, Zumba, and spinning sessions. During one-on-one personal-training sessions, they zero in on a patron's abilities and goals to develop a challenging, yet manageable, fitness regimen. In addition to all the fitness-related amenities, the Modesto and Oakdale locations also feature cardio movie theaters and childcare facilities.
The inspiring trainers at each MetaBody location lead troops of workouteers in results-oriented workouts several times weekly. Sweat sessions utilize a variety of exercises and disciplines to produce full-body results in a supportive environment, ideal for beginners and hard-core core-hardeners alike. During any class, motivational instructors will use the instinctual distrust of routine to their advantage. Begin a day of litigating with a refreshing early-morning boot-camp session, or wind down by burning evidence and pounds with a late-evening yoga class. Muscles are kept guessing with new and challenging moves during each session, so participants never fall into a boring, ineffective routine, such as regular teeth brushing. In addition to the fitness classes, students receive a success guide to help prepare for imminent pound loss, a nutrition guide, and a $100 gift certificate for individual coaching. Because the pass sets a 10-class cap at any given location, roving fitness mavens can further shake up their workout regimens by vetting a series of classes or instructors that work best for them.
When Kristen Horler had her first child in 2001, it seemed as if she would never trim down to her pre-baby body. Try as she might, she couldn't find a workout that did the job, unless it involved hiring an expensive personal trainer, purchasing a gym membership, or convincing Atlas to abandon his post for a few hours. So she decided to create her own mom-friendly workout that would not only help other new moms tone their bodies, but also offer them a strong support system.
Horler drew upon the knowledge she gained working as a former personal trainer and group-fitness instructor and competing as a triathlete to create Strollfit classes. During these 60-minute boot-camp classes, moms exercise alongside their stroller-bound children, performing strength-building exercises, cardio drills, and stretching maneuvers. Strollga fitness classes take moms through yoga poses, often using the stroller as a prop, and four-week Nutrition Solutions programs teach clients how to make small lifestyle adjustments to shed excess pounds.
