In 1958, Ryan Family Amusements founder James A. Ryan opened a simple, eight-lane bowling alley, planting the foundation for a slew of entertainment centers throughout Massachusetts and Rhode Island. At 10 locations, visitors enjoy a variety of arcade and skill games in addition to traditional candlepin, tenpin, or duckpin bowling. Every Friday and Saturday evening from 9 p.m. until midnight, bowling lanes take on an incandescent glow, allowing bowlers to experience futuristic entertainment without the inconvenience of rising jetpack-fuel prices. Bumper bowling is available for younger players, and an onsite concession stand refreshes responsible adults with glasses of beer and wine.

The trainers at Hidden Hollow Farm and Stables help students of all ages and backgrounds build horsemanship skills and confidence on a safe 18-acre farm. Denise and Amy each bring more than 15 years of experience to the equine education of guests, and Amy has helped riders to national competitions. In addition to personal instruction in private lessons, the farm also offers progressive learning in an eight-week introductory program, summer enrichment during a riding camp, and elevated cake fights during a horseback birthday party. The stables house 20 horses and ponies, all of which are ridable year-round.

Of the 48 lanes inside Kingston Ten Pin, only 16 actually have the traditional 10-pins. The remaining 32 are part of Alley Kat Lane, a candlepin bowling facility where bowlers roll smaller balls toward clusters of skinnier pins. Both types of lane host leagues of more advanced players, as well as provide bumpers for beginners. Every Saturday night, all 48 lanes go dark for Rock N' Bowl, where pins topple over amidst thumping Top 40 hits and luminescent black and disco lights. After games, bowlers can visit the pro shop, head to the arcade from some video games, or grab some food or refreshments from the alcohol-stocked snack bar.

It didn’t take long for Robert Bennet Forbes to make a name for himself. He was made a captain by the age of 20, and he quickly amassed wealth and influence as a China Trade Merchant. And despite becoming one of the country’s most prominent businessmen, Captain Forbes still found time to design ships, write, and build an estate that would make Scrooge McDuck molt with envy. Along with his brother John, the Captain commissioned a Greek Revival mansion to be built in 1883. The house was intended for their mother, but over the decades, it would become home to many members of the entrepreneurial family—who collected four generations worth of paintings, artifacts, and various artwork.

Perched atop Milton Hill, the mansion—now a National Historic Landmark called the Forbes House Museum—transports visitors back to key moments in American history. In one part of the house lies memorabilia focused on President Lincoln and the Civil War, collected by the Captain's granddaughter Mary Bowditch Forbes. Her passion for that time period was so strong, she even had a replica of Lincoln's birthplace built on the museum's grounds. Other rooms showcase the valuable Chinese exports collected by the Captain. Sitting atop a table of Cantonese marble and hand-carved rosewood is the crown jewel of this collection, the Election Bowl, a porcelain vessel adorned with two Forbes family crests and two depictions of Scottish castles. In addition to tours, the mansion also hosts various cultural events, including a monthly roundtable discussion on the Civil War.
