Ahva Halma began her love affair with dance early in life, shortly after trading in her footie pajamas for a tutu and ballet slippers. As a young lady, she made her first foray into the world of Latin movement by studying flamenco, a journey she continues to this day in her Zumba workshops. Ahva’s commitment to sharing the fun and fitness-building benefits of dance led her to earn seven types of Zumba teaching certifications. As a registered nurse, she’s equally enthusiastic about women’s health. This is why Ahva additionally teaches Pilates and yoga courses with an emphasis on pre- and postnatal techniques.
Led by fitness expert and former bodybuilder Randy Hartz, Sioux Falls Boot Camp for Women combines fitness training, nutritional counseling, and professionally crafted motivation to help women of all ages and genders achieve their health goals. Each 60-minute session ($14.95 per session) includes calisthenics, body weight exercises, and light running, all of which can be modified to accommodate any level of physical fitness, ensuring that participants feel the scientifically recommended amount of "burn." The boot camp promotes a team mentality; students will motivate one another to take on new challenges and strive for their physical best, all while they feed on the low calories of camaraderie. By the end of the two weeks, boot campers' agility, core strength, stamina, and energy levels will have improved, with some weight loss even possible.
Structured around high-intensity workouts and constantly varied movements, CrossFit is a coach-led conditioning program designed to improve 10 recognized fitness domains, including strength, flexibility, and cardio-respiratory endurance. This comprehensive approach to fitness employs functional movements, such as squats and pull-ups, as opposed to the stationary bikes and highly ineffective grunting machines.
With locations in 24 states, it’s safe to say Fitness 19’s approach to fitness has piqued exercisers’ interest. Each gym houses Life Fitness cardio machines and Hammer Strength strength-training equipment, as well as a staff of personal trainers who oversee one-on-one workouts and a group of caretakers and professional ranch hands who wrangle the kids' area. Certain locations also offer group classes such as the senior-oriented Silver Sneakers program.
At Power Yoga Revolution, Colleen Carl teaches Baptiste yoga. The style, which Walt Baptiste invented and his son Baron evolved, consists of powerful, flowing movements that can improve flexibility and shrink stress glands, just to name a few benefits. Colleen knows the movements better than most instructors, since she has trained with Baron Baptiste since 2010.
Though The Dharma Room is a yoga and wellness studio, it often reverberates with the telltale sounds of a comedy club or a dentist's office with leaky nitrous-oxide containers. Owners Jill Johnson and Sean Gallup put a playful spin on the ancient practice during Laughter yoga classes, a style that mingles breathing exercises with spontaneous giggles. The sessions reflect an overall commitment to finding joy through the studio's yoga and holistic health services, which include massage, reiki, and meditation in addition to the class curriculum.
The Dharma Room's staff endorses acceptance of all guests regardless of experience level or age. Their workshops often stretch beyond the scope of traditional yoga, tapping into happiness reserves with tai chi and crystal-singing-bowl meditation.
